What's the best route? Is it better to stay on autoroute, national roads? I'm scared of losing my way on one of those dozen roundabouts

The way to conquer the rotaries is to make it your policy to always go around them at least once to get your bearings. More revolutions as needed.

Exits are pretty well signed on most roundabouts, but you only just get up to the speed limit and then you have to slow down again for the next one.
