Dordogne River Valley -- Perigord Purple

We're heading to Couze-et-Saint-Front on the Dordogne River (between Bergerac and Lalinde) for 8 days at the end of August. We've found great information on market days and night markets, as well as walks in the area that sound wonderful. We've been to Paris several times and are generally comfortable with the language and urban customs -- staying in a rural village of 750 is going to be much different. Wonderful - but different - and harder to plan for (though a vacation of food, wine, and sitting by the river sounds welcome as well).

The plan is the drive from Paris -- it's 6 hours through the center of the country and we're up for stops along the way (for lunch or signtseeing).

Are there any recommendations that anyone has in the area or on the drive down?

Thanks!

That sounds heavenly, and my idea of a truly relaxing vacation. It's such a beautiful area. I've only been a little further east of there, but this area has got to be gorgeous too.

I just saw some photos on Instagram the other day of a village near there, Monpazier, which the person visiting it said was particularly charming. I've spent some time further east on the river and visiting Beynac and La Roque-Gageac, and up to Domme, which is a gorgeous village with incredible views back down along the river valleys. We did a boat ride that departed from La Roque-Gageac, and loved going down the river to see the beautiful sites on the shore. There's also lots of canoeing in this area, while driving around you'll see plenty of spots where you can rent canoes.

I don't have any recommendations for the drive down, which is likely to be long enough on its own.

One thing I would figure out is where the nearest town with a small supermarket is -- from looking, it wasn't clear that there is one in Couze-et-Saint-Front -- and what hours it is open (especially important in August). The market will be great and you can get a lot of what you need, but of course sometimes you need some other things from the small supermarket. The town map shows where the pharmacy is, so that's good (but you'll still need to check and make sure that it's open in August, and if so, what hours).

It looks like there's a big Intermarché (supermarket) on the eastern outskirts of Lalinde, address route de Mauzac (on the D703 on the eastern side of town). That one is more likely to keep normal opening hours during August. That one will be easy to stop at in your car coming or going. There is also a small Casino supermarket in the center of Lalinde.

Have a wonderful time, I'm completely jealous of your plans!

Hopefully Matt from Somerville will stop by - he's vacationed with his family a couple of times and has always used their time to the utmost!! But yes, a great part of the pleasure will be sitting and sipping and enjoying the beautiful countryside and the honeyed stone buildings. And walks!

We stopped in Oradour-sur-Glane on our drive to Sarlat. It's a village that was destroyed by the Nazis in June 1944 - all the residents were murdered. It has been left as it was that day. It was very moving and makes a good stop especially if you like history.
