We want to stay in a village-- walking distance to bakery and such-- and that is has character. We are looking at airbnb, vrbo, you name it and would love to hear about the top 5 villages in Dordogne, Languedoc or even Midi Pyrenees to stay in. This is for one week in June. We want to relax, tour and enjoy. We will have a rental car.
I'm sure people who follow the France forum will be tired of me saying this but Pezenas is my favorite place to stay in Languedoc! It's a beautiful little town with winding, cobbled streets, lots of good restaurants and shops, an exceptionally good weekly market, and many surrounding wineries and other villages. The beach is only about 20 minutes away, you can walk along the Canal du Midi, and visit the Cevennes. It really is a lovely area and a nice place for an extended stay.
I would consider Pézenas a small town rather than a village. Have a look at Olargues - plenty of good walks around there. And don't miss having a meal at the Auberge de Maroul. I can't especially recommend the B&B where I stayed, unless it's important for you to have an English host.
Thank you. I have looked at those. We want to find a home in the town. They look nice. Are there any recommendations in Dordogne? Anyone familiar with Domme? Or others?
We stayed in Sarlat, so a city, but had a great airb&b just outside of the historic center...great 5 minute walk to market, restaurants, etc. And compared to a city like Paris or Nice, it felt village like. We had a day trip to the Caves and Saint Cyprien market. And of course canoeing on the Dordogne.
Later this year, we'll be staying in Montpelier, with day trips to Sete and Saint Guilhem. These were selected based on great advice from this Forum.
Here's the place in Sarlat. Fab place in Sarlat/Dordogen
I would recommend Sarlat in the Dordogne.
Has lovely market on Saturdays, lots of interesting streets and shops
Plus it is a good base to visit other areas such as Domme, Font de Gaume (definite place to go), le roque gageac, Beynac to name a few
We stayed there in October 2016.
Domme is not a place I would stay, very small but worth visiting on a half day trip
We stayed at Moulin de la Ville just outside the village of Beaumont du Perigord and would highly recommend it. It is a b&b located a short walk from the village center. Dinner is also available, or there are restaurants in the village. We stayed for a week, using it as our base to explore the Dordogne.
Check out Saint-Cirq. Small, overloooks a valley, castle ruins, all the good stuff. Close to Pech Merle.
Sarlat is a medium sized town, not a village.
I stayed in Beynac, right on the Dordogne and under a castle. Very nice, very well located.
Others I visited in the area that looked worth a stay were La Roque Gageac (Dordogne) and St Cirq La Popie (Lot).
We spent a week in Beynac a couple of years ago, in a house. It's a charming village, with a bakery, a butcher shop, and a few restaurants (which we never tried).
As pointed out by another poster, Scarlat is a small town, but we stayed there on two occasions and loved it both times!

Stayed here twice. Has everything you are asking for. The butchers meat is best I've had in France. I'm honestly considering another trip just for the pork!
Would definitely choose Beynac over Domme. Access to the river is nice in the evening. If it is hot, you can swim at the beach in Vitrac.
Here's another place in Beynac (forget the mention of Biarritz; I don't know why that mistake hasn't been fixed), probably very close to the one listed by Matt. It's smaller than that one; only for 2 people. We stayed there in 2016, and loved it.

THese are all so helpful. Some of the listed places are not available when we are there. This is great-- anyone have a plus or minus for the town/village of St. Cyprien? We found a lovely home with a pool there. And walking distance to town.
St. Cyprien: Never stayed there but been to the Awesome market on Sunday twice. While the river is a feature in Beynac (restaurants are right on the river), it is a 25 minute walk from St Cyprien.
We made 2 visits to St. Cyprien when we stayed in Beynac. Once for the great market, and once for lunch and to stroll around the town. It would certainly be a worthwhile place to stay.
Ok. THis is all coming together. Thank you kind travelers. A few more questions-- if we are coming from Zurich-- where should we go on the train then get a rental car? Then we need to fly out at the end from a nearby airport to leave the car and fly to Granada or Malaga if we can't fly to Granada!
If it were me, I would look into cheap flights from Zurich to either Bordeaux or Toulouse.
