Dordogne- La Roche d’Esteil

Anyone ever stayed in this place before? About to make plans for a trip to the Dordogne next April/May 2020 and wonder if this would be a good base......we will have a car. Thanks for your help!

We stayed in this place in October 2016. The place itself was peaceful but rather out of they way - it is a good 20 minutes drive even to Sarlat (which is nearest town) on a road that is quite narrow in places. On hindsight I would have stayed in Sarlat itself as that is a good base for the Dordogne
The room was quite small but clean and breakfast was good.

We'd made a reservation to stay here in July 2019, & then they begged off with a family medical situation. If they've re-opened, we recommend it in theory!

In reality, we had a great stay instead at the Auberge Castel Merle, just above the tiny hamlet of Sergeac; lovely place & owners, Brit Christopher & wife Anita whose family has owned it for generations. Also very good dinner at local Restaurant Peyrol Jeanine, still run by 91-yr-old Jeanine. Sergeac's midway between Montignac & Les Eyzies

If you're thinking about Sarlat, we stayed there in the old town, in Les Appartments de la Boetie, terrific location, lovely, comfy, quiet. Parking was a pain (though free), in a municipal lot 5-10" walk away. But we'd do it again: the quiet mornings & nights along medieval lanes, oh, my.

Further west, there's a wonderful rural B&B with gites south of Bergerac, Les Petit Clos. American ex-pat owners Hank & Cindy, GREAT people & place.

We stayed there, but I think it has changed owners since we were there. I absolutely loved the property and really preferred staying there to Sarlat (when I visited Sarlat, I thought it was fine, but I was glad I was staying out in the countryside and not having to drive in or out of the city every day.

We had a big room; my parents slept in the ground floor bedroom, and I slept upstairs in a separate bedroom. I believe there was also a toilet up there, but we all shared the shower that was downstairs.

The buildings and setting were beautiful and tranquil, and we were very pleased with our choice. We also enjoyed the dinner we had there, although again I think this was under previous owners.
