We plan to spend several days in Dordogne, but hopefully close enough to Bordeaux so that we can spend some time there as well. Any recommendations for a town to stay in that might fit this bill? Thanks in advance.
Hi Eric,
Dordogne/Bordeaux is really not a thing, as the regions are too far apart. I am someone who prefers to stay at a single home base as much as possible, but in this case I would have two.
If you don't mind extra driving you could maybe base in Bergerac. I confess though that I do not know it.
It’s a two hour plus drive between the two. We are spending two nights in Bordeaux before heading to the Dordogne for a week this June.
Thank you.
FWIW, in the Dordogne region I stayed at La Tour de Cause B&B and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's run by two chefs so breakfast and the occasional dinners are fantastic. It is located a few miles south of Beynac and west of Domme.
Thank you.
I think you will find good deals in Dordogne but not in Bordeaux. On a recent trip, which included Paris and Strasbourg, the most expensive part was Bordeaux by a huge margin. And its kind of funny because Bordeaux feels very over-rated to me - and famous more for the name of the wine, rather than the merits of the city itself. The place that is very cool that is nearby is St Emilon. The surrounding area is a nice with many wineries and even some winery/hotels in that area. But for better or worse, there wineries are not set up for tourism like California's Napa valley. There are also small towns like Libourne nearby. One of the advantages of having a car is that you can save money by staying in the less popular cities on the outskirts.
On the other hand, the Dordogne is an amazing area which a fairly dense collection of forts and bastilles. For example, from Sarlat you could bike 20 minutes to three other places with famous castles. Perigieux is a nice smaller city and worth a visit or stay. And many other places too.
Thank you so much.
