Have done a bit more research since I last posted so now we are thinking about spending a week or so either in Sarlat or Domme, Beynac, or Roque-Gageac or in that general area (near Sarlat) and 3 or 4 nights east of the A20 near St Cere or Carennac. I know Sarlat is a busier town and the others are villages ... But this request is not about town comparison just about recommendations of great accommodations that those of you who have been to this area might be willing to share. Likely it will be a gite, but if you’ve stayed at a lovely inn or B&B in one of these spots, we would love to hear about it. For us staying at a great spot really makes our trip and vice versa. I so appreciate your help. Thanks! PS we are looking at a Fall 2022 trip, in what we hope will be a post covid world.🙏
Certainly open to hearing about a specific property recommendation, if you have one, as we are do early on in the planning process 😊
As recommended by Rick Steves, for our first visit to the region we stayed at the wonderful Le Petit Versailles B&B in Beynac-et-Cazenac, run by Mssr. and Mdme. Fleury. We even ran into Mssr. Fleury on our daytrip to Sarlat one day. The view across the valley from our room at night was magical.
Two years later, they were booked up when we were returning to Beynac, so we got a workable hotel room nearby, but if you can reserve at Le Petit Versailles in Beynac-et-Cazebac, it is the place.
Sounds like you might have better options already, but I'll put a plug in for the Hotel du Chateau (https://www.hotelduchateau.fr/). Nice rooms, some with views over the river. Pool. Really nice restaurant downstairs. Right on the main intersection in Beynac, directly below the chateau. No parking on site, unfortunately, but a cheap and convenient lot right across the street along the riverbank.
We had a marvelous stay at La Tour de Cause in the village of Castelnaud la Chapelle. They serve what is possibly the best breakfast I’ve ever had at a b&b. Several times a week you can also opt for their outstanding dinners. The hosts create a super friendly atmosphere, where everyone socializes as if they were all old friends.
C-l-C is well placed for visiting many sights if the Dordogne. We had been several times before, so on this trip we visited a few previously missed sites in Les Eyzies, Domme, and Sarlat. We also took in Josephine Baker’s chateau (super interesting!) and the gardens of the Chateau de Marquesac (sp?).
Another vote for Le Petit Versaille. Wonderful accommodations with excellent hosts and very special breakfast.
We can highly recommend Clos Lascazes in that area.

Beautiful, charming, great hosts. Close to many of the places you mention. Loved it!
Like Cyn and Becky, I suggest Le Petit Versailles. Great view over the valley, great hosts, great breakfast, easy walk into "downtown" Beynac, where there are several good restaurants including the one at the Hotel du Chateau.
We loved La Lanterne BnB in Sarlat in 2015. It was great to be able to walk to restaurants and the fabulous market (and not have to seek the rare parking space on market days). I don't know if it has survived the pandemic. I would return, Sarlat is a delight.
I recommend Maison Pierre d'Or on the edge of Sarlat. This is a large house divided into a few very pleasant self-catering apartments. The owners live on site so they are available to give advice, if requested. There is free private parking and the main road out of town is nearby. It's an easy walk into the heart of Sarlat or to a local grocery store. Besides a very well-equipped kitchen with a washing machine there is a dryer on site. Our apartment included a small living room, bedroom, sunroom, private bath and a private balcony. Everything was sparkling clean and tastefully decorated.

Thankyou so much. Have just about made up our minds to stay at Maison Pierre, because we would like to have kitchen facilities etc.; which apartment did you stay at there? And did you stay for a week and were you able to fill your time for that long? Thanks so much, Joan
Le Petit Versailles just above Beynac would be my 1st choice if you don't rent a gite. Wonderful location, wonderful hosts wonderful breakfast (and dinner on request) and absolutely stunning 2 castle (lit up) view from the terrace or the raspberry room. The hotel I would recommend is la Belle Etoile in la Roque. If you don't stay there you might want to just have a drink by the window around sunset. But I agree about renting a gite. 1 of the benefits being that you can shop in the many wonderful outdoor markets in the area and then cook what you found. There is a Hamlet, Simon just outside of Cenac-et-st-julien (very close to the river). My husband and I have stayed in 2 different gites there. If it is still being offered, la Terasse and clos D' Alice are offered by Andre, a very lovely man. La Terasse, as the name implies has a wonderful terrace for dining. It's a very spacious and lovely 2 bedroom 2 bathroom gite. In Simon we have also stayed at le Pleasant, which we also liked although it's not as gorgeous as la Terasse (and even less expensive). Wherever you stay, I don't think you could find a more lovely area.
