Does anyone actually know why the G7 taxi app doesn’t work with US credit cards?

I was planning to use the G7 taxi app in Paris but when I went to use it I got an error message that complained about 3D security. I tried my other credit card without success. Why did fail? Why didn’t warn me when I signed up for G7? I would like to understand why, please no speculation.

I've successfully booked using the G7 app several times in Paris with my US credit card. Never had a problem

You probably used VISA cards, it will work with a Mastercard or an Amex.

Thanks, good to know. Does make you wonder why it doesn’t work with the most common US credit card.

My Taxi G7 account works fine with a US credit card. The card I use is a Mastercard but that was not to avoid using Visa. It was to use a card that did not charge a foreign transaction fee which my Visa card does but my MC does not.

3DS security is a common feature in Europe with credit cards, basically it authenticates an internet transaction. It is similar to 2 Factor identification you may use to log into a secure website, but involves 3 parties, in this case, you, G7, and your credit card. If your credit card had 3DS, or works with it, it may just authorize the transaction without notifying you, or ideally, you get a code from your credit card company to enter into the G7 site, and the transaction is approved.

I would try another card, despite lack of 3DS, many US cards will work, though you do not indicate what cards you have (Discover for example...not going to work)

If you still have problems, call your credit card company, it may be a feature they can activate...or you may just hear a long pause on the other end of the line and a "now what are you asking?".

I successfully used the G7 twice in January using my VISA card via the G7 taxi app.

Like everyone else I’ve been able to use my credit card with the G7 app without any problem. I have a vanguard visa that’s linked to my G7 app

I’m not sure why you don’t want speculation because honestly, no one on here works for G7 or your credit card company so all we could give you a speculation

To get an "actual" answer you would need to post three things:
1. The specific type of card (Visa/MC/Discover), issuer (Chase, etc..), and which card (Platinum, Gold, etc...)
2. Did you arrange for a pin number or 3D with the card issuer?
3. You would need a poster here who works for that card issuer, who knows all their nuts and bolts.

So best you're gonna get is speculation. Very useful, informed speculation, though.

Here's an actual fact: It's not possible that nobody's credit card works with G7. G7 would have noticed.

We would get a text authoritzation code each time we used it. We'd put that in and no problems.

I think you guys are getting to the heart of it, I had never heard of 3DS until my G7 transaction was rejected. Wonder what the number of false positives is in this case… My cards are both VISA, one is Chase and the other is USAA. One has a PIN . For now, since this is the only internet app that has flagged this, I will do nothing and let the market decide if 3DS is a good approach. But for me I don’t plan to use G7 again. Uber has worked when I needed it, except for Monaco.

I have used my Visa many times with G7 but I order airport cabs on the phone. I tried to set up the app recently and had the same problem of it not loading my Visa. On other apps I get a code when buying something. I used Bolt instead; I wasn't very happy with it (the drivers were fine, but I would get half a dozen 'driver found' then driver rejected the ride notices before finally getting a car including one where a driver was supposedly coming and then it dropped and they searched for another. Took forever.

Why I use the metro.

Does the app always ask for text verification from/to your bank every time you book a ride?
Sounds like it.
That would prevent me using it then, as my phone is too old for esims in order to get a message from my bank on my original number.

SJ, can you enable "wifi calling" on your phone and send/receive texts just using wifi data? If I recall, I've done that in Switzerland. I recommend people use "airplane mode", enable wifi, and try it out at home first. But if you have to remove your "normal" sim card to insert a French one, then ignore this idea....

Bruce, glad you have a workable alternate. Enjoy the trip!
