Does anyone actually know why the G7 taxi app doesn’t work with US credit cards?

I was planning to use the G7 taxi app in Paris but when I went to use it I got an error message that complained about 3D security. I tried my other credit card without success. Why did fail? Why didn’t warn me when I signed up for G7? I would like to understand why, please no speculation.

I've successfully booked using the G7 app several times in Paris with my US credit card. Never had a problem

You probably used VISA cards, it will work with a Mastercard or an Amex.

Thanks, good to know. Does make you wonder why it doesn’t work with the most common US credit card.

My Taxi G7 account works fine with a US credit card. The card I use is a Mastercard but that was not to avoid using Visa. It was to use a card that did not charge a foreign transaction fee which my Visa card does but my MC does not.

3DS security is a common feature in Europe with credit cards, basically it authenticates an internet transaction. It is similar to 2 Factor identification you may use to log into a secure website, but involves 3 parties, in this case, you, G7, and your credit card. If your credit card had 3DS, or works with it, it may just authorize the transaction without notifying you, or ideally, you get a code from your credit card company to enter into the G7 site, and the transaction is approved.

I would try another card, despite lack of 3DS, many US cards will work, though you do not indicate what cards you have (Discover for example...not going to work)

If you still have problems, call your credit card company, it may be a feature they can activate...or you may just hear a long pause on the other end of the line and a "now what are you asking?".

I successfully used the G7 twice in January using my VISA card via the G7 taxi app.

Like everyone else I’ve been able to use my credit card with the G7 app without any problem. I have a vanguard visa that’s linked to my G7 app

I’m not sure why you don’t want speculation because honestly, no one on here works for G7 or your credit card company so all we could give you a speculation

To get an "actual" answer you would need to post three things:
1. The specific type of card (Visa/MC/Discover), issuer (Chase, etc..), and which card (Platinum, Gold, etc...)
2. Did you arrange for a pin number or 3D with the card issuer?
3. You would need a poster here who works for that card issuer, who knows all their nuts and bolts.

So best you're gonna get is speculation. Very useful, informed speculation, though.

Here's an actual fact: It's not possible that nobody's credit card works with G7. G7 would have noticed.

We would get a text authoritzation code each time we used it. We'd put that in and no problems.

I think you guys are getting to the heart of it, I had never heard of 3DS until my G7 transaction was rejected. Wonder what the number of false positives is in this case… My cards are both VISA, one is Chase and the other is USAA. One has a PIN . For now, since this is the only internet app that has flagged this, I will do nothing and let the market decide if 3DS is a good approach. But for me I don’t plan to use G7 again. Uber has worked when I needed it, except for Monaco.

I have used my Visa many times with G7 but I order airport cabs on the phone. I tried to set up the app recently and had the same problem of it not loading my Visa. On other apps I get a code when buying something. I used Bolt instead; I wasn't very happy with it (the drivers were fine, but I would get half a dozen 'driver found' then driver rejected the ride notices before finally getting a car including one where a driver was supposedly coming and then it dropped and they searched for another. Took forever.

Why I use the metro.

Does the app always ask for text verification from/to your bank every time you book a ride?
Sounds like it.
That would prevent me using it then, as my phone is too old for esims in order to get a message from my bank on my original number.

SJ, can you enable "wifi calling" on your phone and send/receive texts just using wifi data? If I recall, I've done that in Switzerland. I recommend people use "airplane mode", enable wifi, and try it out at home first. But if you have to remove your "normal" sim card to insert a French one, then ignore this idea....

Bruce, glad you have a workable alternate. Enjoy the trip!

Just as a follow-up, I checked with my card company, and they confirmed that they support 3DSecure. They suggested that the problem must be the merchant (G7). Not sure how you contact G7 to get their take on this.

Bruce, my Chase card gets rejected about once or twice each trip due to 3D secure. When it fails, my Citibank issued credit card always works. I think Chase must be behind with regard to 3D secure. You might try your USAA card to see if that works.

I had a similar issue three days ago (Sep 2025). I successfully registered my Chase VISA credit card within the G-7 app, but every time I tried to actually book a taxi, it failed with the 3D Verification message. (In my case, my US eSIM number was disabled and I was using a French-number eSIM on my iPhone, so if a text was sent to my phone by the bank, I would never have received it - I assumed that the fact my credit card was 'accepted' that would be enough.)

I'd like to get this problem sorted before I return to France in January 2026. ( I fired off a message to G7 support, so we'll see what they say.)

I had a weird experience earlier today. I went through the process of installing the app and when I got to the point where I had to put in the code I had not received it. So I waited about five minutes then requested another code. Nothing. I must have tried this about four times because about an hour after I gave up on it my phoned dinged and there was the code. Entered it, and got a message saying it was wrong. Then three more codes came in quick succession. Unfortunately, none of them worked, and then I was locked out for too many attempts 😄

I just think some apps are going to be glitchy. I successfully used my Chase Sapphire card to pay for the G7 taxi with no problem.

If your card or cards doesn't work, just keep using another one. I had a problem recently trying to pay for a train ticket in Romania. I tried two different cards and both failed, and then finally hit the jackpot on the third one. It's just a game of chance, I think. Your best bet is to have 3 or more credit cards available to use. I have 7-8 on Apple Pay so I know I can always find one that works.

I have the G7 app on my phone and have used it in the past -- now it will not accept the credit card registered with it -- a VISA that works everywhere else. I will make my airport reservation on the phone and see if it works that way otherwise not sure how to make that reservation -- I guess I could pay cash.

Just to clarify though, there are taxi lines at the airports, correct? I'll use public transportation once I get into the city, but plan to use a taxi to get from ORLY to 15th arrondissement upon arrival. Reading this thread has me happy to avoid the app if possible.

Yes, there are official taxi lines at the airports, with clear signage. Ignore anyone who approaches you separately.

The G7 app didn’t work for me either. I’m not going to belabor it when there are other options. I only need a single taxi ride. I booked another option to the airport. Convenience is the greatest factor to me so if an app doesn’t work, it’s not convenient to use IMO. I’m not willing to stress out over an app to save a few Euros.

I was just able to upload my credit card information into the G7 app without issue. There was an extra step in that Visa sent me a pin code via text I had to enter before it would work.

Bruce I’m sorry for your issues but glad you started this thread so I was aware there are problems.

I’m currently in Paris, needed to set up a taxi to a train station tomorrow. I’ve had the G7 app for years and always successfully used my Chase VISA card. Just tried to book and got rejected. Decided to change to AMEX where I went thru a CC verification then payment was rejected. I decided to uninstall the app, then shutdown my phone. Waited a bit then reinstalled the app, signed in to my account and my AMEX number was there. Tried booking again and it went thru this time along with a pre-auth charge so I think the booking is valid.

I’m in a hotel and can have them call for me in the AM if the driver doesn’t turn up.

Very annoying but I’d recommend uninstalling the app and reinstalling if you’ve been using it for a number of years.

I prefer to use taxis but ended up using Bolt on the few trips where I could not use the metro or bus system. I was able to use G7 for the airport but called and then paid the driver in cash as I usually do. We had the app also and have used it in the past with VISA. Other sites work fine and I get a code when using my VISA -- this step didn't occur with G7 - just rejection.

Pam:
Thanks for the suggestion about re-installing the app. I'm back at home in the US, but this hint may help someone else. It is disappointing that the automatic G7 app update did not fix this. In our case, we just walked to the Gare EST taxi stand, and there was no line, and the fare was reasonable, so only G7 suffered.
Also, this was rush hour on a Tuesday so there is a slight advantage to taxi travel as they are allowed to use bus lanes in Paris. Not sure this is true for Bolt or Uber.

No, Bolt and Uber can’t the bus lanes and that is often a huge advantage to an official taxi! Your solution was excellent!

BTW, G7 had pre-authorized a fare of about 50E for my taxi from hotel to Gare du Lyon yesterday. The actual amount on the meter was much less and that original charge was amended by the time I thought to check on it a few hours later.

I may start deleting the app when I’m back home from Paris and reinstalling as part of my pre-travel check list.
