Do paris hotels charge a deposit to gaurantee a reservation?

I booked a reservation to Aparhotel Adagio for four nights. I chose the higher rate which was fully refundable, free cancellation ( up to 2 days prior arrival), no prepayment rate. I needed to provide my credit card # to gaurantee the reservation. It said " you will not be charged. This step validates your reservation." My reservation confirmation showed that I was charged $0, and the full amount of stay to be paid at the hotel. No mention of prepaying a deposit. To my surprise, I was charged 50% of the stay on my cc. I phoned the hotel and they said because I from US they charge the deposit. With no deposit they would cancel my reservation. Is it customary for hotels in Paris to charge a deposit to gaurantee a reservation? Thank you in advance for your help.

I routinely book reservations at Accor hotels , Adagio is one of their brands . This has never occurred in twelve years of travel . My best guess is that you booked this on a third party site and not on the official Accor site . Is this the case ? Currently I have a reservation for 12 nights in September at an Accor Hotel in Paris . I made the booking last November , same arrangement as yours . No charges to my credit card.

I booked directly to the Accor site using my membership number. Was your credit card ever 'pre-authorized' or funds held for any of these stays?

That does seem odd , but I wouldn't be too concerned . I have been using Accor for quite a while , and always had a good result with them . As a member , I do have a credit card on file with them which confirms my bookings , but I don't think your situation would be different than mine . It's highly unlikely that you would have any problem with your reservation if you changed your plans .

Sorry , I almost forgot - My card was never preauthorized or charged on any of my bookings unless I took a non refundable offer

I have had a couple of instances where my CC was charged for one night then the charge was rescinded within about 24 hours. I assumed it's like the gas stations around here which float a huge charge to see if the card works, then reverse it by the end of the day. The 2 instances were not an Accor hotel though.

Were you actually charged or does the listing say "pending." Quite often, a hotel will block a certain amount but have not officially charged your card. That will disappear when you actually get charged for your stay or you cancel.
