Can American disability placards be used in France? If not, is it possible to get one while in France for your rental car?

I've never used my card in France, but I've used it in Italy, Austria and Germany with no issues.

We also used our parking placard with no trouble in France, but we also printed off a description of the placard in French and placed that on the dashboard along with the placard (don't hang). My husband found the description on line (we also have one for Italy and Russia). But they expect you to have a wheelchair with the placard- we talked to several police. Note that a wheelchair and 1 assistant get into most French museums for free.
