Dinner hosted by local residents

Someone told me that there are local residents who host dinners to tourists.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

Thanks!

Hi - in France in general, or in a specific city or village? There are plenty of cooking classes around France where paying participants join in the meal they’ve prepared at the end, but I’m not aware of a particular hosted dinner where a French local feeds visitors.

You could look into airbnb experiences - I've not used it for meals (and not sure if that is a thing) but am looking at it for upcoming trip (to Austria and Italy) where people offer tours and workshops and I believe in checking out what is avail, I might have seen meals prepared...but it would of course depend on where you are going.

eatwith.com is the website for this. Not only can you eat with locals sometimes they also teach you to cook as well. Great experience!

hey hey Janet
How fun this will be. I have saved a few sites since we will be there last week of September for 8 days and wanna do it.
mamazsicialfood.com
getyourguide.com ( use filter button to culinary and a few come up. Some are dinner at a home in Paris or you can do a market tour, pick what you want to eat, and they come and cook at your place)
meetingthefrench.com
labellaassiette.com
gastrohoming.com
some have mentioned the Airbnb site, tried to book something couple years ago, emailed them and was told had to stay in Airbnb property. don’t know if things have changed since. Also ask hotel/apartment your staying at for info

The EatWith program in Paris is fantastic! Go to their website and you will see dinners hosted by local residents (often chefs and artists). It's a good way to meet locals and other tourist in small settings. This spring I actually hosted a dinner for my friends who live in Paris with wonderful EatWith hosts. You can also find cooking classes hosted by locals in their homes. The program is also available in New York and other cities around the world. It is reputable, safe and always a great experience.

Eatwith was originally Vizeat (they acquired Eathwith), who was well established already with the concept in France (hq is Paris) -- you might guess from the wordplay on the original name -- so you'll find plenty of choices there since they are long established.

What a great idea Janet! I hope you can follow up with eatwith and arrange a dinner.

We have had the privilege of having dinner with local residents. We arrived at our B&B in Paris at 8:30 at night. We asked for recommendations for a local café, but our hosts insisted on providing a simple dinner. Our hostess gave our host a bottle of wine, shooed us off to the courtyard and 20 minutes later we sat down to a bowl of potato soup and a salad.

We spent a week in Loches where our grandson's girlfriend lives. Her parents hosted us for dinner one night and we traveled to a small village to have dinner with her grandmother. There's nothing like breaking bread with new friends!
