Most of Mt. St Michel is owned and operated by one of two families, so you will see the same menu all along the main street, and it won't take you long to read them all. You may pay a little more for a view, or to dine at La Mere Poulard, which is famous for it's fluffy omelets. (The omelet-whipping show in the window is free, just as you enter the island.) Our tour group had a nice dinner at La Croix Blanche last year. Some hotels require you to take half-board and dine with them.
We had dinner at a restaurant near the top of the Mont just before the Abbey with access from and out to the ramparts. It was one of those run by the Poulards who run pretty much everything. They started serving at 7; we were there in October and there were few people -- a German tour group and a handful of other couples, but I assume during season it needs a reservation. I think it might be attached to a hotel. It was I believe called Les Terrasses Poulard.
We had heard that the food was expensive and mediocre on the Mont. Our dinner was nothing to build a trip around but it was perfectly adequate with 3 decent courses for a reasonable sum. And the view out on the mudflats/bay was spectacular until night fell. We had a drink and watched the sunset while waiting for the place to be open to serve dinner.
We were very disappointed in the Poullard omelet restaurant. Our meals for the two of us were almost 100 euros about eight years ago. Service was awful and the waiter had a bad attitude--requested bread several times and it never arrived. I had the puffy omelet and it was flavorless--husband had some type of fish--and we had inexpensive wine and wilted salads. It was a waste of money for sure.
