Dijon to Nice

We are traveling from Dijon to Nice around August 20 and may rent a car for the trip. We would like to drive through Italy and stay one or two nights near San Remo. I would appreciate any advice either for or against. And comments on: car rental, traffic, safety, etc.

Our original plan was to take the train to Nice, with one or two nights in Avignon.

There's no issue with driving the French car through neighboring countries as long as you return it within France. France and Italy both have highway tolls that you pay as you go on the faster roads, while Switzerland requires the car to display a prepaid decal/vignette before you drive any faster roads in that country.

You also could travel from Nice to San Remo by train in 1.5 hours with a connection at the border station at Ventimiglia.

Our driving plan is to drive south to Lyon, then towards Turin and south to San Remo. We plan to stay one or two nights near San Remo before finishing our vacation in Nice for five nights. Possibly drop off car in San Remo or drive to Nice and drop off.

Thanks for the feedback.

Do plan to drop it in Nice as anywhere in Italy will cost more. Also, car rentals sometimes cost the same for 1, 2, or 3 days (and also for 5, 6, or 7 days).
