My wife and I are planning a 3 - 4 week trip to France. From Annecy we would go to Dijon and then proceed to Colmar. If not, from Annecy we would go to Colmar and then Metz. Which of these two (2) cities are nicer and better for visiting - DIJON or METZ? We have other cities and towns on our itinerary, but really want to know whether we're better off with Dijon or with Metz. Thanks!
Hi,
Between the two, take Dijon. I went to Metz the first few times for historical reasons plus I didn't know about Dijon then, ie in late 1980s. Much nicer place Dijon.
Metz is the capital of Lorraine, much-fought-over and passed back and forth between France and Germany, giving it an unusual character. That history is reflected in its cuisine and especially its taste for beer. It has handsome civic gardens and a handsome cathedral in the centre. But its most modern feature is the first satellite branch of the Pompidou contemporary art museum from Paris, housed in a distinctive new building on the edge of the centre. Arriving by train you will pass through an impressive station built on the order of the last German kaiser. One full day will cover the attractions nicely.
