Okay -- hear me out please. I have my heart set on Annecy and have been told it is foolish to waste travel time on getting there. However, this is my plan. After a stay in St.Goar (Rhine), I will venture to Annecy. I had considered flying out of Frankfurt to Geneva, but the train to the airport takes almost 2 hours. Then I have to allow time at the airport (another 2 hrs?) and a little over an hour to fly. About 5 hours to Geneva. A train would get us to Geneva in about 7 hours for a much lower cost and much less stress (IMO). I enjoy train travel, but would like advice as to which route would be the best to take. Leaving Sept. 9th on the Bahn site, I see 7:19 am St. Goar and arrival in Geneva at 2:54 pm. I did find several other options. I need help with locations. When I search St. Goar, there are several choices. Also if I plan on taking a bus to Annecy from Geneva (which is quicker than the train), do I want to arrive at the airport or the train station in Geneva (and which train station?) Thanks for all your help - I am getting closer!
Hi,
Where do you search for tickets? When I look at the German railways website (DB) there is only one St Goar, and DB will sell you tickets all the way to Geneva. The best route is the one with fewest connections - you can go as low as two connections from St Goar to Geneva Aéroport. (For the Annecy bus, Transalis t72, you want to go all the way to Genève Aéroport).
The DB website will list all of the individual bus stops in a town, you want the one that is just "St Goar" with nothing else.
Some of the buses from Annecy go to the airport and some to the bus station which is some distance from the main railway station, "Geneve Cornavin". The bus-to-rail connection is very easy at the airport, and many long-distance trains from Geneva to other parts of Switzerland start at the airport and then pass through Cornavin.
Thanks - I was under the impression that I would have to take a train(free & quick) from Geneva Airport to the city center and then walk to the bus stop from there. I am not finding a current schedule for the bus to Annecy. I would like to know if I should depart at Geneva center station or go on to the airport station. It makes difference where I catch the bus.
Also - would anyone know if there are other bus options? Flixbus has only one departure at midnight. I find other buses and not sure I can depend on them. How long will a bus take - I see anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours. Has anyone taken a bus here?
As stated before, Genève Aéroport is the station you need. That's the Airport. All information for the Transalis bus is found here
https://www.transalis.fr/en/destinations/line-t72-annecy-cruseilles-geneva
I would not recommend any other bus company for that route, since they don't have the same frequency.
Enjoy the trip!
I've taken that recommended bus many times, and one bit of advice is to check the timetable closely for when you plan to get to the airport. I believe there are a couple of long gaps, and I think the weekend schedule (or at least Sunday) may be less good.
Thank you all for your help. It took a while to figure out the bus timetable; I finally clicked on "buy ticket" to get a schedule. Of course there are gaps in the departure times; especially in the afternoon. Therefore even if I fly, I will need to wait at least 1-2 hours for a departure. Hmmm ... getting back to the Train schedule now. It is all coming back to me regarding the stations, routes, etc. I do have a new question : If there is a notice regarding a late train (20 Min. because of construction) and the transfer time given is only 15 minutes, am I correct to assume that I will not make that connection? And if that is the case, why would that route be offered?
This is my last hiccup in the plan and I really want to get it done. (Especially while the saver fares are posted.)
If it says there is a planned delay because of maintenance, then the times you see are including that delay. You have 15 minutes to change even with the delay.
If it wasn't for the delay you probably would have been given an earlier train, it is explaining to regular travellers why you they aren't listing the normal connecting train.
15 minutes between trains is plenty, 10 or even in some cases 5 is acceptable.
Seven hours of train travel time is stressful to me, because I know I still have to get where I'm going once I arrive at the station. It sounds like the flying options aren't any better. You could consider flying from Cologne rather than Frankfurt but I'm not sure how much that will help.
Have you considered options from St. Goar to Lyon? Or St. Goar to Paris (then train from Gare de Lyon to Lyon). The train is about two hours travel time from Lyon to Annecy. I ended up driving because it was faster.
Two things I can help with having just returned from a trip that included Annecy, and travel between Annecy and Geneve.
Annecy is beautiful, and lots of fun. Don't let anyone decide your vacation for you. We loved it, stayed two days but could have stayed a week. It's a leisurely place, not one filled with a ton of "must sees, and can't misses" but still a great time with a fun history.
On the Oui.sf app I booked transit between Annecy main station and Geneve eaux vives rather than triying to tame the train transfers. It was a quick easy bus ride, took about 45 minutes and cost very little. The stop is on the other side of the bridge, about a 20 minute walk to the main Geneve station where you can connect virtually everywhere.
Note, the bus shows up under the train schedule as autocar, I assure you it's a bus not a train. It was not entirely clear on the app or website.
To Chris F - I thank you for the info regarding a train delay. I tend to find the places that are a bit more difficult to get to, but it has been worth it! I did find a train schedule with only two changes; and I believe it will work for us. Even if we fly, we still have to wait for transportation from Geneva to Annecy. I often wonder why people say there is not much to see/do at a destination. I always research the area in advance and find a variety of options. I go with my gut - so far so good.
The suggestion above of going via Lyon or Paris does not work, it is actually significantly much longer than what you have in mind via Geneva! And don't worry, it will work: it is hard to get 100% of information ahead of time, but in that part of the world, rest assured that if a train is late there will be a next one, and that there will be people around, speaking your language, and willing to help.
Thank you Balso for the reassurance. I have received a wealth of information from you and a few others over the years. We will be visiting Paris after Annecy, and would like to know when those tickets will be available to purchase? Perhaps after this trip, we will look at choosing one location and staying put - but I doubt it :)
hey hey Betty
have to giggle with another Hawaiian here, when we want something we will find a way!
check trainline.com and you can book train (annecy to Paris gare de Lyon station) for 2 people $107 direct leaving about noon. Get to Paris in time to check in. have fun and a hui hou.

Mahalo Pupule - I was thinking Trainline was a third party agent; I always book direct. By the way, I will probably contact your taxi source for Annecy. I looked at her website and sounds great to me.
Hey hey Betty
I’ve used trainline a few times, easier for me. Some people use loco2.com. My train is booked Paris to geneve, just waiting on date to open for later in September back to Paris. I print my tickets from home. You’ll get different answers from people but I’m happy with what I have.
