Deciding on Hotel - 10 Days in Paris

Hi forum folks! You all are always so helpful so I wanted to ask for opinions. My husband and I are going to Paris for 10 days next summer, either late July or early August. He's a professor so we pretty much have to go in the summer. I've been to Paris twice and stayed on Ile St. Louis (Hotel Lutece, which I loved) and the 9th near the Opera Garnier (Hotel St. Petersbourg, very nice hotel). My husband has never been to Paris. We're both in our 40's, love history, museums, walking around the city, good food, not really into nightclubs or bars. Our budget is around $250 a night (give or take). I've looked into apartments but since we want AC, they're running above our budget.

This is a birthday trip for me so I want something a little special. :-)

I think I want to stay in a different neighborhood this time and I've tried to narrow down the hotels to the following:

Hotel Monge - 5th
Hotel Victoire & Germain - 6th

or
go back to Hotel Lutece - Ile de St. Louis (i stayed here in 2001, so it's been a while)

All of these hotels have great reviews on Booking and TripAdvisor and I know Lutece gets good press on these forums. I'm just wondering if you all have any preferences, been in the neighborhood recently, stayed at these hotels, etc.

Thanks everyone!

Check out Maison Albar hotels. They have 5 in Paris. I stayed at the one called Opera Diamond. It was very nice and it was about 190 euros in late July.

I can appreciate the urge to try some place different, but I can't seem to pull myself away from Il St Louis. This June will be my 4th time in 8 years and I'm considering air bnb this time, but still Ile St Louis! Enjoy your trip - wherever younend up! sue

you can check out alcove&agapes.com, cross-pollinate.com, and theplumguide.com we usually use booking.com and tripadvisor once, but there are 3 or 4 of us and we like apartments.

I live in Paris, and my family visited this summer for the first time: ages 9 to 76. They stayed near where we live, in the 3rd arr., at Hotel Américain (on rue Charlot). They are pretty picky, and they thought the hotel was quite good. There is no air conditioning and the weather was warm when they visited, but there were fans and they said it was absolutely fine in the rooms. There’s a boulangerie next door, and the street is quiet there — it’s off the beaten path a bit but still close to everything, of course.

Thanks Mary! I know how I am though and I really want A/C. I was in Berlin in June 2016, it was in the 80's F and I was so hot! My room had climate control but not A/C. I appreciate your response!

I'm with you Michele - with climate change and the nasty heat waves in recent years, there's no way I'd stay in a hotel in Paris in the middle of the summer that didn't have A/C! Sure, you many not need it, but if you do and don't have it - there goes any enjoyment of your vacation. I was there in Paris in early May 2018 in a room with no A/C, and it was almost too hot even then.

Hi Harold!
Yeah, I'm pretty American with my A/C needs! i actually prefer to travel in the winter but my husband is a professor and is scheduled to teach winter intersession, so we're stuck with July / August. But hey, it's still Paris! :-)

hi michelle
i agree with you on A/C in july or august. Have you found a place to stay? "but hey, it's still paris" is like if life gives you oranges you make cointreau or cognac and you got lemons make limoncello!" :) have a great trip

Fred,
I was in Paris first, which is when it rained so much the Louvre flooded. It was cold and wet. Then we trained to Amsterdam, warmer and drier, then Berlin and our train A/C was not working...we were all so hot on the train so when we got to the hotel I couldn't wait for A/C but alas, I was still hot! But I loved Berlin, I was there for grad school for a week but I want to go back on vacation. :-)

@ Michele...When the train's AC did not work, that happened to me also on the ICE train from Hamburg to Berlin. This was in June 2017, a year later than what I referred to above. Yes, it does get pretty stuffy. The ICE personnel announced their apologies, explained why the AC didn't work in our coach, and offered water in little box containers free to everyone. First time I saw that. I remember riding the trains in the summer of 1971 and '73 in Germany with no AC back then and the coach was past 80F...those were the days !

"...grad school for a week." Fanrtastic...at which university in Berlin?

Hi Fred! We didn't get water!! The nerve!

I did an MBA at Cal State Long Beach and we spent a week with students at SRH Hochschule Berlin. There are students from all over the world studying there, even from the US. My degree has an emphasis in sustainability, so we also visited Feldheim village, an energy self-sufficient village and toured the BMW motorcycle plant. It was a great experience!

Back to the topic, we've decided on Millesime Hotel in the 6th. I'm super excited about going back to Paris with my husband!
