I am planning to stay a number of days in Avignon, Arles, and Nimes. I expect to send two full days exploring each of them and from those cities, I will take day trips, by either bus or train, to places including Orange and Uzes. It looks as though Beaucaire and Tarascon are adjacent to one another, so would be combined in one trip. Right?
And what about Vaison--la-Romaine? Should I go there for a day. From which city would it be easier to go there? I would not want to combine it with a visit to Orange. Do you recommend that I visit Saintes-Maries and Aigues-Mortes? One or both?
Medieval Aigues-Mortes is visually stunning but very touristy. I was glad to see it, but you can walk every block of every street within the walls within a few hours. I'm a slow traveler, but I felt it was sufficient to arrive in the afternoon and spend one night there.
You don't need all day at Vaison-la-Romaine.
One person said that I do not need all day for Vaison-la-Romaine. But given that I would be taking a bus there and back from one of my "base" cities, is it worth the trip? And if so, from which city should I go? Thank you, all, for your replies. They certainly help me with my plans.
Alas, I can't help you re buses in the area. We always drive. Last time we were at Vaison, it was on the way from Le Pegue (teeny tiny town) to Bandol. We stopped there en route for about 2-3 hours. To me, that is plenty of time. You can add more time if you have lunch there.
