Day Trips from Strasbourg

Hello! I will be in Strasbourg in less than two weeks. We have a lot planned (going to many of the villages in Alsace) and even doing a day trip to Heidelberg. We have two free days and are looking to do another day trip somewhere (preferably outside of France)

Any recommendations? We're thinking about Freiburg but want to hear other options.

Note: we will be going to Switzerland after Strasbourg (to Basel, Zurich, and Chur)

Although they are in France, Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg was very nice. Near the German border is Maginot Line Fort Schoenenbourg. It was a very worthwhile visit. A rental car would probably be best for getting to each of those locations.

Hi,

If you have a rental car, that would be most convenient in going to Freiburg, as the route is lateral. Another place in Germany nearby is Rastatt.

If you decide to stay in Alsace, then I suggest Colmar and Mutzig, connected by regional train.

We did two day trips earlier this month during a 6 day stay in Strasbourg. They were both excellent.
1) We took the train to Nancy to see the Art Nouveaux architecture. Easy train ride, walkable city, very fun.
2) We took the train to Schirmeck to see the World War 2 museum there. Great museum dedicated to the specific role of the Alsace area during the war since Germany annexed it. It was also nice to be in a tiny village, sit on the main square, have a coffee etc. while waiting for our train back to Strasbourg.

If cars are of interest you can think about the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums both in Stuttgart. Not across the border but in Mulhouse the Musée National de l'Automobile with it's unique Bugatti collection is very worth to visit too.

Possibly the Le Courbusier chapel in Ronchamp. Vitra architecture and design campus in Weil am Rhein, Basel?
