Hello,
We are going to spend a week in Lyon and want to go on one or two day trips. I’d love to hear from those that have done this and which towns you enjoyed. Thank you!
I enjoyed a wine tasting tour to Chateauneuf du Pape which only 2 hrs south of Lyon.
Vienne is less than an hour south of Lyon and is one of the most important locations for Roman, papal, and French history -- on par with Avignon but much less touristed. On the other side of the Rhone is Saint-Romain-en-Gal, with well-preserved ruins.
And for epic dining, you can't beat the Pyramide, which celebrated their 200th anniversary in '22,
"un établissement iconique "
Des grands noms de la gastronomie française ont décliné l’art culinaire dans ses cuisines – les premières à décrocher les trois étoiles au guide Michelin en France – et ont cultivé l’art de vivre et de recevoir au sein de cette demeure de charme.
The current chef has held his 2-star Michelin status for 33 years.

(Although frankly the cuisine nowadays is too veggie-forward for my tastes; pick something downtown instead)
The TI moved into a modern glassy office / display space relatively recently, and is promoting local establishments, so you need to be a bit persistent to get to the historical roots.
Thank you! I’ll look into both places and the restaurant.
For amazing wines, there is no need to go as far south as Chateauneuf du Pape. You could just head to Condrieu or Tain l'Hermitage (which also has the Valrhona chocolate museum).
Another suggestion, which can be done as a half-day trip, is Pérouges: cute village a 20 minute (slightly uphill) walk from Pérouges-Meximieux train station.
There’s also Côte-Rotie, just south of Vienne. Not as famous as Chateauneuf etc but excellent. Never cheap AFAIK but maybe if you go to the source?
Thanks for the additional input!
