Day Trips From Colmar Dec. 19-26?

My husband & our two teens will be staying a week in Colmar over Christmas and we would like ideas for day trips in the area. We have been to Strasbourg already on previous trips. We prefer to take the train, if possible.

Thank you!

Darlene, First a warning. Everything shuts down mid afternoon on the 24th. Christmas markets end (in most places) midday on the 24th. Christmas eve evening is more important than Christmas day. Very little will be open 25th (Sunday) or 26th December (Monday). Public transport will run a Sunday/holiday service both days. Make sure you have found somewhere to eat on these days.

Now the good news. Monday 19th to Friday 23rd are good days.

  • I recommend one day in Basel. I live here, I am biased, but it is a beautiful city. Lots to see, old town, cathedral, museums, Christmas market. regular trains from Colmar. More info here: https://www.basel.com/en
  • Freiburg im Breisgau. A limited train service changing in Mulhouse.
  • Mulhouse, a small old town.

In the summer I would recommend the Alsace wine towns, but you need car and the days are too short in winter.

We loved Colmar. We day tripped to Haut Koenigsbourg castle. Loved our 1/2 day there. Going there we drove through a cute town called St. Hypolite. Gorgeous.

We did a day trip to Basel just to say we had been to Switzerland. It was very cute.

Our favorite was Eguisheim. LOVED IT. So picturesque. So sorry we only had 1 1/2 hrs there. Soooooo pretty.

It is all about the nearby villages. There are a few. We had a car so it was simple for us. The rte from Colmar to strasbourg has a picturesque setting with these sm quaint and beautiful villages along the way. Do not short Change Colmar has it has alot of beauty also. Walking along canal, the museum etc.

Mulhouse old town will be unimpressive by comparison to Colmar, but the city has the French national museums of both cars and trains, which are highly recommended to enthusiasts of either.
