Day trips from Aix with/without a car over Christmas

I hate driving on vacation. Thus, I have put off renting a car for my holiday trip, to my own detriment. I am planning to stay in Aix (would not be impossible to switch to St Remy if that would help), and just starting to look at cars, because my initial plan was to do day trips to Les Baux and some Luberon villages. We will also go to Marseille, but I imagine we don't need a car for that. Possibly because I waited so long, cars are more expensive than I thought, and it is also harder than I thought to rent from the city center, rather than the TGV station, which is not so close to my hotel and thus inconvenient. While researching, I came across this law that possibly you need all kinds of snow gear for certain parts of the Luberon? This freaked me out a bit -- for starters, I prefer not to drive where it is going to be icy. For another thing, I have no idea how to operate snow socks or snow chains. So, even assuming I would plan to avoid those areas, how would I know in advance if I was going into them or not?

It seems these day trips are not possible without a car. So I am asking for advice on this snow stuff and whether perhaps there are equally delightful day trips that don't require a car. Thanks. :)
