Day trips from Aix Les Baines

I will be traveling to Aix les Baines in August of 2026 for a dragon boat festival and want to do some day trips from there but have no clue how to figure out where and how to travel. I have never been to Europe so it's all new to me! Any advice is appreciated. I have already ordered Rick's guidebook for France which should be here tomorrow. :)

Thanks!

Annecy is 45 minutes away by frequent trains. Grenoble is an hour away by less frequent trains, but a couple in the morning and returns in the late afternoon, at least on weekdays. 2026 is a long way away. That guide book is apt to be outdated in 2 years, but it will get you started.

hey hey mrspirate99
glad you are looking ahead. we stayed in annecy for 6 days on the lake and it was wonderful. love this small town with much to do for us. it would be nice to spend a night there that gives you time to enjoy the shops, restaurants around city center and canal walk ways.
take the train, less than an hour

we walked and roamed the center, took a private taxi tour around the lake and it's villages, couple restaurants to check out:
creperie ti mad (21 rue royale) sweet & savory yummy crepes was our own opinion
al vesuvio (13 rue I'lle) may walkway of center. yoummy italian food. we had calzones & pizza with rose wine on outside table sitting with other europeans
rotisserie du thiou (passage de L eveche) down small alleyway near canal. family owned hole in the wall with a fixed price for fondue lunch, wien, sit outside and people watch. was a fabulous day
have a sandwich with their local cheese, raclette (?), ham on a roll

The train company is SNCF, you can find train times on the SNCF Connect website or app. Besides Annecy and Grenoble, Lyon is very doable as a day trip from Aix Les Bains, and Chambéry is worth a couple of hours.
Not sure Rick Steves covers Aix les Bains in its France book, though. You might want a second guidebook focusing specifically on the region, such as the Green Guides (but those tend to be aimed towards car travellers, at least the older editions that I have).
