Day trips from Aix-en-Provence in early May

My husband and I are visiting our son, who is studying in Aix this semester. My son's schedule is up in the air during our visit so we are planning day trips with the hope he can join us. The possibilities in that area are overwhelming so wondering if you all can offer some suggestions. We love history, art, and great food. Also enjoy nature and a bit of shopping. We plan to spend some time in Aix and Marseille but are open to renting a car to visit other places. We have about 3 days for trips outside of Aix. Thank you.

My wife and I are going to the Luberon and St Remy in early April. There is so much history in this region because it is where the Rhone flows into the Mediterranean. The best preserved Roman public works are in this area. There are many Medieval and Renaissance sites as well. This is not an unabashed commercial for Rick's Provence and Riviera book, but that is one of the places we started to look for great things to do. Also look beyond that on places like Youtube and Atlas Obscura. We are planning to do a mix of hiking, dining, farmers' markets, vineyard tours, historical tours, seeing natural sites--such as the Luberon region, Mont Ventoux, and the Calanques. When we get back home, I will post my recommendations.

I left Aix a eeek ago and I went to Brignoles, Saint Maxim, Forcalquier, Pertuis, Ansouis and Manesque--especially on their market days.
