Day trip to Versaille

Hello,

My husband and I are traveling to Paris in May. We would like to day trip to Versaille. Is Sunday a good day to visit? And how do we get there?

It will be more crowded than a week day but has the advantage that the Musical Fountains will be going ( classical music plays and the fountains will all be on). The drawback to that is it adds to your ticket price.

Highly recommend spending time on the official Versailles website and booking your tickets through it. The line for people waiting to buy tickets was incredibly long! A timed entry ticket is worth it especially if you only have one day. Versailles is huge. You could spend several days there trying to see it all especially since its so spread out. The tram helps with this.

Unfortunately it looks like they are no longer offering timed entry tickets, unless you book a kings apartment tour. I tried to get them for several different days and finally emailed customer service at Versaille. They sent back a message saying they were no timed entry tickets at this time.

I would recommend booking the guided tour through the palace website. You get to avoid the long lines, and get a private tour of areas not open to the General Public. Tours are in different languages so choose the one you want, I took English. It's only 12 euros. Absolutely worth the price if not just to avoid the long lines. It's a 90-minute tour. And then you are free to walk around the palace on your own. This 12 euros is in addition to the entry fee for the palace but as Rick recommended I had a museum pass that I used. The musical Garden days are nice , but cost an additional eight euros but I wouldn't plan my day based on that, it was nice, but nothing special. The Fountains only run at designated times and they alternate so you have to be at the right place at the right time in order to see it. I believe the train that you take to get there from Paris is the RER C. As previously noted the palace website has a lot of information, but you need to search about.

I did plan my visit for a Sunday just for the musical Fountains. Made me smile and added to the visit. I went in August and made sure I arrived before opening

How to get there? There are many options. The most common, as far as I know, and arguably the easiest is to go via the RER C commuter train. See https://parisbytrain.com/paris-to-chateau-versailles-by-train/ for instructions. Last year, during the train strike, I sent my travel companions there via Metro Line 9 to Pont de Sevres metro station with a connection to bus 171. They liked that route mainly because the bus dropped them off closer to the palace than the RER C would have.
