Any recent experience with a small tour company that offers a day trip from Paris to Monet's Garden and Versailles? Or is using public transportation preferable? We'll be in Paris for the first week in August.
they are on different train lines -- it is not reasonable to do both on public transport. You might find a tour that combines them although it will give rather short shrift to both.
Do you have 2 days available? Easy to do it yourself on public transport, but both in combination in one day. Transport is not convenient between them, as noted above. My first thought was also that a combined tour would short both before I read Janet’s opinion.
Giverny can be half a day, Versailles half or more depending on your interests in exploring the park and outlying buildings.
We recently spent 4 weeks in France, mid-May to Mid-June. In June, the weather in Versailles and Giverny was in the mid-80s (30 - 31 C), muggy and HOT. Crowds were significant in Giverny, particularly in line to get into Monet's house and going though it. LONG line to get into Versailles, even with a 9 am ticket in advance, in hand.
We took trains; even when air-conditioned (Vernon/Giverny), the air conditioning could not keep up with the outdoor heat and in-train body heat, so youare probably right to look for a tour (and tour bus).
Due to heat (and crowds), those days in Versailles and Giverny were probably our two least enjoyable days out of 4 weeks in France. August? Find places where you might stay cool. Perhaps you might look into smaller museums and parks and gardens in Paris, whether or not you choose to add these two one-half day to full day trips to your one week visit. The Sarah Bernhardt exhibit at the Petit Palais will still be on, to name one smaller museum where you can probably just show up and not stand in line.
thank you for all of the recommendations.
