Day trip to Freiburg from Colmar

Hello travelers,

My family of five (two parents, three teens) is spending the first week of April in Colmar. We had planned a day trip to Freiburg on April 4 but now I'm struggling to find details on the bus/train option to get us there. Some think train/bus public transport is complicated, but it sounds better to me than driving.

I've read about this bus/train travel option from Colmar to Freiburg on many travel forums. They say it is possible to buy a "regional day pass" ticket that would be quite inexpensive -- one traveler posted that it was 12 euros one way. Another posted it was 27 euros round trip (for up to five people???). One person called this ticket "combined ticket called the RegioAlsace".

When I search for these tickets using the Bahn.de website, the total is about $479 for five round trip tickets.

Are these cheaper regional tickets a real thing still? If so, do I just buy them when we get there?

Can anyone offer help?

There is a regional day pass for 5 people for 32 euros. This covers a direct bus route from Colmar to Bresiach, and from there you catch a local train to Freiburg, and it takes about 90 minutes total. I'm unsure if the regional pass covers the train from Bresiach to Freiburg, it sounds it based on other online reports, but the website regarding the ticket doesn't state it, so you'll need to do more research. But certainly do not spend $479, that probably has you going through Basel and taking a fast train back up. No need, the bus + local train are timed for each other and is the fastest and cheapest way to go.

Thank you Sarah! I am so relieved that this cheaper travel is an option. And thanks for the link. However, I do not read German -- the translation options are weird -- they are actually links and I don't think either of the three options apply to me. Not sure. If anyone can add further light on this topic I would be so thankful.

I traveled from Colmar to Freiburg im Breisgau a few years ago by this bus-train connection. It worked great; the bus drops you off outside the train station, hop on the train (tiny little train station and a small regional train). I was alone so just bought single tickets at the bus/train station in Colmar. I seem to think it was one ticket all the way through - was five years ago.

The page Sarah linked to says the pass for five people costs 32 Euros. Use the Google Chrome browser to translate the German into English automatically (or with one click). I don't read German, either.
