Day trip or longer for lavender?

Hi all~

I'll be part of a Rick Steves' Paris and Best of France tour in July. I am planning to stay on another three days, with hopes of seeing Provence and especially the lavender fields. I need advice as to which is best: The day tours (fast train, long day) from Paris to Provence, or trying to go on to Provence (I'll be on my own), book a hotel there, and see the region with a local tour at a more leisurely pace, i.e. over two days.I suspect the latter would also involve the rapid transit, which is fine with me..... I'm most grateful for any opinions/info. you can share!

I think you mean the Paris and "Heart" of France tour, since that one returns to Paris. I would be inclined to stay over two or three nights around Avignon, rather than making it a daytrip. But if you're booked to fly home from Paris, then do return and stay there the night before the flight. From Paris-Avignon, the TGV fast train takes 3 hours each way. Is the daytrip company taking an early departure, like 7:30 or 8:00? If you're booking train tickets on your own, they are cheapest to reserve now, rather than waiting; compare rates through RailEurope and CapitaineTrain web sites.
