We want to take a day trip to Chablis from Paris when we are there in March and I am considering renting a car. Is there a rental car agency outside of central Paris that anyone recommends or does anyone have better suggestions for transportation?
If you pick up at Orly, it's a 2-hour drive on the A6. You can take a slow, local train to Auxerre, also about 2 hours, and pick up a car for the 14 km drive to Chablis.
We went down there in August and picked up in Paris at Montparnasse Station because it was the closest to us. Getting out of Paris wasn't bad. Returning the car to Montparnasse was a pain in the neck. We've made this drive dozens of times but when visiting from the States, usually pick up at Orly, where the rental offices are clearly marked, as are pick up and drop off. Next time we'll take a taxi to Orly to pick up and the cheap bus back into Paris after dropping off. BTW, my husband learned to drive in Paris, so no problem there, but we'll go to Orly.
Otherwise, there is a small Europcar office outside the peripherique at the Porte d'Orleans. That one is quick onto the freeway.
We made the train trip to Auxerre that Bets describes and picked up a car right at the station. Drove to Chablis for lunch. There are some very pretty towns on the Serien.
Either way, it is a long day trip. I'd suggest spending the night. We went on to Vezeley.
