Hello, People. Going to Paris for a week. A lot to see on my mind. Want to squeeze everything I can in one week. Question: is it possible to see Epernay and Versailles in one day? That's the only option I have. Thanks
ooh, sorry, I just don't think it's possible. You're looking at 4.5 - 5 hours just in transportation time, which doesn't leave enough time to see the sites. You'll have to pick one or the other, and then come to Paris to see the other one!
I assume you are talking about going by train. Yes it's possible but it would be a long day and Versailles might end up getting short changed. You could go to Versailles early when they open and leave maybe around 1:00-2:00, back to Paris, change stations, get the train to Epernay. It's about 1-1/4 on the train from Paris to Epernay. If you're going to Epernay to visit a champagne cellar you'll probably need an appointment because you'll be getting there mid to late afternoon.
Now, you could do it the other way around, a morning trip to Epernay and then back to Paris and on to Versailles. It's certainly possible to do that but Versailles may be more crowded at that time. It also depends on what time of year and what day of the week you're going. Lots to consider.
Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that we are driving. Is it better?
When will you be in Paris? If it will be April 1 or later, I would go to Epernay first and then go to Versailles because the gardens and the park are open until 8:30 after that date.
It will definitely be better if you are driving but you'll still have to consider the timing regarding the places you want to visit - Versailles first, then Epernay or the reverse. Again it depends on if you're going to do tour of champagne growers/cellars in Epernay (and if you need appointment for that) and how thoroughly you want to explore Versailles. I had toured the palace many years ago so when I went back this most recent time if was just to enjoy the gardens, the trianons, Marie Antoinette's hamlet, etc and that alone took me the better part of the day.
You asked if it was possible. Yes, it's definitely possible, how enjoyable it will be depends on you and your touring style.
Thank you. We going in the beginning of May. Epernay, as I know, is just one hour tour in a cellar. We'll try to do Epernay and Versailles after. I read that in Versailles something not opened before 12pm. Is it right?
The Trianon palaces and Marie's hamlet open at 12:00. The palace opens at 9:00. The gardens open at 8:00.
If you're going to tour the palace and can't be there before it opens then the best advice from this forum has been to wait and try after 3:00 pm when the crowds from the tour buses start to thin out. You can tour the gardens, and the outlying palaces first and then do the main palace later in the afternoon. It's open until 6:30 but I would think last entry would probably be about 5-5:30.
