Day trip from Nice

Hello fellow travelers~

I'll be in France from July 11 to July 20 for my 50th b-day. On one of my days in Nice, I'm considering a day trip to Italy by train. Worth it or not, and what's the go-to destination? I'm up for a full day round trip, and it'll be by TRAIN. Thinking about just taking the train along the coast to "some point" for lunch the returning to Nice for dinner.

You can travel quite a distance into Italy, if you so choose, with a transfer often in Ventimiglia (or via Thello). Many people just venture into Ventimiglia for the Friday markets. I find Bordighera to be a very pleasant Italian resort town, but some like San Remo, as it is larger. Genoa is three hours and would make a very long day.
