Day trip from Bordeaux

We (senior couple) will be picking up our rental car in Bordeaux in early October. We want to spend a day driving in the area before we head south. We enjoy departmental roads in France. Any suggestions?

The town of Arcachon is pretty and then there is the Dune de Pilat.
