What are your recommendations for d-day tours in Bayeux?
I can recommend Sylvain Kast with high praise. Amazing & passionate guide who will go out of his way to personalize your tour and he's a wealth of information. Our day with Sylvain was the highlight of our visit to France and worth every penny we spent to engage his services. http://www.d-day-experience-tours.com/
You can find many guides for that area on www.toursbylocals.com Just narrow down your area by clicking on the map and then look at all the guides and their tours. You can also read feedback from previous customers. We've used this website to book local guides in several countries.
I loved the tour guide used on the Paris and Heart of France tour a couple of years ago. It was Dale Booth and he was really excellent. He asked if anyone had a connection to DDay and was able to work in information specific to those people. I specifically asked if he could point out ALG1 (Advance Landing Ground 1 which my Dad's fighter squadron used DDay + a few) and not only did he do that but he added info about ALGs as we went thru the day.
We did an all day tour with Overlord and while we generally don't do tours, we found this one both informative and convenient.
Oliver with Normandy44-tours was excellent. Used to work for Disney, father served for France in WW2.
The Forum has several threads with recommendations/comments accessible thru the Search field above. We used Bertrand Saudrais (Executive D-Day Tours): excellent all-day tour, customized to your particular interests; picks you up/delivers you back to your hotel; running commentary supplemented with photos, maps, anecdotes; charming, humorous and thoughtful (suggested a carry-out lunch from cafe in Sainte-Mère-Église that we enjoyed while riding to the next stop -- not a wasted moment, all day). His website: http://www.executived-daytours.com/ (includes a button/link to TripAdvisor reviews.)
There are lots of guides in Normandy, and a few of the favourites are.....
- Overlord Tours - they offer both half and full day tours and provide transportation, so you could cover two different themes (ie: American or Canadian sights). They get very favourable reviews from those that have toured with them.
- Dale Booth tours - also a favourite with many, and used by some tour firms.
- D-Day Historian (Paul Woodage) - one of the best guides in Normandy and often used as a consultant by History Channel and others.
- Visitdday.com (Chris Emery) - If you have a rental car, Chris is a good choice as you can tailor the sights visited more to your interests.
We did a full day tour in April with Bayeux Shuttle that was wonderful. Group size was small, and while we had a schedule to follow our guide never made us feel rushed as if we were dashing from one place to the next. Another plus is that they own the location where lunch is served (included in the price). Food is waiting for you when you arrive so no time is wasted placing orders.
We recently took a tour with Bertrand Saudrais. It was an excellent tour and I recommend him.
I have also heard good reviews on Overlord.
I think you will be happy with most of the highly rated guides. They mostly have a standard list of sites to which they will take you. Private guides will offer a bit more flexibility.
Have a good trip.
Thanks for your responses. This is a great service.
All of the previous tour companies are very good and we toured with Overlord and really liked it and got a lot out of it.
