Cruise stop in Toulon. Cassis?

We are a family of 7. We have. Stop in Toulon on our cruise. Seems to me that Cassis is where we need to go. Train? Taxi?

What advice can you share?

Since the train stations are a bit further from the action in both towns, most people use a local bus or taxi to/from the Toulon and Cassis train stations.

Taxi or car rental are both complicated by the need for a larger vehicle (or two cars). I don't know the taxi price for a trip of more than 40 km each way, but a one-day car rental might be similar. See some resources listed at http://toulontourisme.com/en/traveller-information/access-maps-transport-toulon/.

According to rome2rio a taxi is well over $100 one way.

Your ship will probably dock in La Seyne-sur-Mer, not the Toulon port itself. If you buy the Rick Steves Mediterranean Cruise Ports book, there are directions on how to get from the cruise dock in La Seyne to the local train station. Probably the best course for seven people is to arrange for a minivan taxi in advance to take you to the train station. Of course, if you are just looking for beach time, there is a nice beach in La Seyne--Plage des Sablettes--you could just have the taxi take you there.

thanks for the replies

has anyone been to Cassis? Is it worth the effort to get from Toulon to get to Cassis with four kids in tow?

We spent a couple of nights in Cassis several years ago. It's quite attractive, but I'm not sure children would enjoy it.

On three different, brief visits, the Calenques were my focus and I did not stop in Cassis itself, so I can't judge the town as a destination. The Calenques require a hike or a boat ride beyond Cassis and both can have limited space. In the height of summer, hiking trails can close by mid-day due to crowds and fire danger.
