Critique My France Itinerary

Hi everyone,

In a previous post, I asked for suggestions on what to do between Lyon and Paris, and I’ve spent some time since then researching, adjusting, and thinking things through. I’ve now put together a possible itinerary and would really appreciate your feedback and thoughts on it.

20/06 - Arrival in Paris → train to Lyon (explore Lyon)

21/06 - Lyon

22/06 - Lyon

23/06 - Lyon

24/06 - Train to Marseille (explore Marseille, sleep in Marseille)

25/06 - Day trip to Aix-en-Provence (sleep in Marseille)

26/06 - Train to Avignon (explore Avignon, sleep in Avignon)

27/06 - Day trip to Arles (sleep in Avignon)

28/06 - Train to Beaune (explore Beaune, sleep in Beaune)

29/06 - Wine route around Beaune (sleep in Beaune)

30/06 - Train to Dijon (explore Dijon, sleep in Dijon)

01/07 - Dijon (sleep in Dijon)

02/07 - Train to Paris (explore Paris, sleep in Paris)

03/07 - Paris

04/07 - Paris

05/07 - Departure

Questions:

  • Does the overall pacing make sense?
  • What are the must-do experiences in each stop (especially food, wine, and local spots)?
  • Any restaurant recommendations you think are worth booking ahead?
  • In Beaune: best way to do the wine route?

Raphael,
It sounds good to me. Pacing isn't onerous.

I booked a couple of wine route tours through the Beaune tourist information. They were very helpful, especially the one in the link below. I don’t know if that’s the best way, but it worked for me. In Beaune, a must-do is the Hôtel-Dieu Museum to see the Beaune Altarpiece.

Generally it looks nice, though I have a couple of observations, and a different mode of travel idea that may or may not appeal for your Burgundy or Provence segments

  1. You have just three nights (2 full days) in Paris, but four nights (3 full days in Lyon). I’d definitely switch that. Four nights in Paris and three in Lyon.

  2. I’ve only been to Provence once - for a week. Back in 1999 and we had a car. I cannot fairly comment on your plan, but as a member of the “less is more” club, I wonder whether someone who knows Provence better might suggest one rather than two bases, or, if two, whether the two (Marseilles and Avignon) that you have identified.

And for something different, perhaps … My wife and I cycled for a few days from Dijon to Beaune this past September. Self-guided; the company books bikes, hotels and luggage transfers and you just bike from one village to the next with winery, restaurant and other stops along the way. If a three-day, four night - or even a two-day, three night cycle trip is of any possible interest, for Provence or Burgundy, look at https://www.freewheelingfrance.com/ and https://www.levelovoyageur.com/fr/accueil/ for different possibilities.

In France, we’ve taken three to seven day e-bike trips in the Dordogne, Loire, Alsace and Burgundy areas. Our Alsace & Burgundy Trip Report is here. It gets you closer to the ground, with more opportunities for chance encounters with people and easy access to winery tasting opportunities if that’s of interest to you, though you typically need to book those in advance with the wineries. See, e.g. Beaune area wineries or https://www.ruedesvignerons.com/en/region/vignoble-bourgogne. We certainly enjoyed our wine-tasting by bike from Beaune at Bader-Mimeur, near Chassagne-Montrachet, 18 miles RT with a nice stop for lunch at Meursault.

You’ll easily find similar web-sites for wineries in Provence and the Cotes-du-Rhone.

Whatever you choose, enjoy this first trip to France and to Europe.
