Country of Residence

It seems a lot of people are having a problem filling in "Country of Residence Abroad" when filing for a QR code.

It's simple....."Country of Residence" is the same as "Where do you live?" If you live in the U.S. but are visiting Germany, you don't put your current German address, you put your U.S. address (if you live in the USA.)

Oh, but wait, it says "abroad." True. But remember, this is a French document so outside of France is ....abroad. They want to know where you live outside of France. Not where you are visiting, where you live.

I think they may have used Google translate. When I put in the French term, "Counry of Residence Abroad" came up and it's not a way English Speakers would request that information.

Many are so worried that they are overthinking this.

Thanks Frank II. There're many examples of translations not being exact, even in official documents.

I think it was the “abroad “ after it that threw people off.

That's all it takes. As Frank II said, its not the way a typical American would say it - an example of our US-centric way of thinking. Just like all those times when a headline of "Country X to open doors to international travelers" resulted in people assuming "international" specifically meant US travelers.

I am trying to fill out the French form, and it asks for country of residence abroad and also country where I received vaccine. I keep entering "United States" and it keeps saying "result not found". There is no drop down menu to pick the USA. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution? Thank you!

The answer is Etats Unis.

United States/USA is in English.

États Unis? That's French.

As Nigel is saying, type in “ETA” in the country drop down box, and you’ll get what you need — Etats-Unis, which is the French way of saying “United States.”

when I filled out the form these lines were served by a drop down menu -- they did not allow me to type in an answer

Another reason for avoiding Google translate

Indeed it is a dropdown menu, as I said, but you can type to search within the dropdown.
