Cotes du Rhone and/or Luberon

My original plan was to drive from the Marseilles airport to Orange and end up in Gigondas for the night and spend the next day in the Cotes du Rhone area. With the help of this forum, I have decided to stop for a few hours for lunch in Roussillion before continuing to Orange and Gigondas.

The encouragement I received for the stop in Roussillion, raises another question for me. Is the Luberon area that nice and, might it be worth a night (or two) stay there and not go to the Cotes du Rhone area? After a night or two in Luberon area we could check out the Roman Theater in Orange and head down to Arles, Les Baux, Pont du Gard, etc. for a couple of days.

Is Luberon and Cotes du Rhone very different and worth the effort to see both? My wife doesn't drink and I'm not a big wine connoisseur so missing a world class winery in Cotes du Rhone would not necessarily ruin our trip.

Thoughts?

Many Thanks.

Tom

The Luberon is a pretty special place with tons to see. I'd vote to skip Cotes du Rhone although the little tons near Gigondas are pretty cute too but we were there on a wine mission. Add Fontaine - de - Vaucluse to your list of stops. You will not regret it. I liked it more than Pont du Gard.

Both the Cotes du Rhone area and the Luberon are really worth seeing. If I had to choose, I'd probably give the nod to the Luberon. But I disagree with the recommendation of the Fontaine de Vaucluse. I thought it was a total tourist trap. However, the Pont du Gard is amazing.
