Cotes du Rhone

I'm planning a trip to Provence and The French Riviera the first 2 weeks in May. Rick recommends staying in Vaison la Romaine. Is there any good reason to visit there since my husband doesn't drink and neither one of us are interested in vineyards? He mentions a couple of hikes and we do enjoy hiking. But for hiking we go to the Alps. We will. be in Switzerland hiking in July. Should we skip this stop on the itinerary? We have a car. Thanks for your input.

Provence is huge. Vaison la Romaine is but one charming town you could stay in. And it is relatively farther north from the Riviera than other towns (like Arles, or Il sur la sorgue, or Aix...). I visited Vaison from Il sur la sorgue, so its possible to visit many places in Provence with a car if there are several you are interested in. Have you read a guide book describing the various towns? What interests you about Provence? From that you can hone in on a town or town that best suit.

Vaison has some very good Roman ruins, and Mount Ventoux nearby makes for a great scenic excursion nearby (by car), but it is not central at all to the main sights of Provence and the roads tend to be slow-going, so not the best base in my opinion!
I think that you will not miss that much if you decide to skip it.
