We plan to stay in Nice in July and wondering if there are fresh water swimming alternatives to the sea within an hour drive.

Hello!
The sea is not not too cold, just enjoy fresh water swimming too and it will give us an opportunity to see some of other areas in the region!

Google shows many fresh water lakes in the region.

It's 2 hours not 1, but Sainte Croix lake by the Verdon has great freshwater swimming. Upstream, there is also some swimming at Lac de Castillon, a hair closer to Cannes/Nice. And much closer to Cannes, lac de Saint Cassie also has swimming - never tried it there, though.
