We have an afternoon free in our short Lyon Itinerary. Can anyone share their experience in either of thee museums? We saw neither on our first visit and are going back to see the Resistance Museum which was closed on our first visit.
Looks as if you're headed to the Resistance museum, which is a good choice. The other two depend on your interests. If you have an interest in the development of motion pictures, the Lumière museum would be a natural choice. On the other hand, if you are interested in natural history, then the Confluence museum would be the way to go. The Confluence museum is much larger, by the way. The Lumière museum is pretty small.
You didn't mention la Musée des Beaux Arts de Lyon. It's quite good and its entrance is located on Place Terreaux, the same place where Fontaine Bartholdi is located; originally conceived for Bordeaux, which cancelled the project due to cost, but later obtained by the larger and wealthier Lyon.
We were really impressed by the Confluence Museum when we were in Lyon in December. It's primarily natural history, but it brings art and culture together with science.
I have only been to the Lumiere Museum so I cannot compare the two. I do not have any particular interest in film but I found the history both of film and the Lumiere family very interesting. Their family home is also lovely to walk through as you see the exhibits. The museum is easily reached by metro. It was worth the time, as well as getting to see another neighborhood of Lyon.
