I am travelling to Giverny in late April. I thought I was being smart by buying a ticket online, but I purchased a combination ticket which includes the Impressionist Museum as well as the house and gardens. My ticket says, "Billet Couple Musees des Impressionismes + Maison & Jardin Monet"
The ticket shows the Musee des Impressionnismes address. My question is: Can i go to the Garden and House before I go to the Museum? I think the gardens open at 9:30 am and the Museum doesn't open until 10 am. I don't want to waste time going to the museum first. Thanks so much!
It's fine to go to the museum first. For people without a ticket in hand, making the museum the first stop can also help avoid a long ticket line at the garden.
In Giverny, these places are within walking distance of each other in this delightful village. I would only add that you ensure you visit the Orangerie Museum (located at the end of the Tuilerie Gardens) in Paris, either before or afterwards. The Orangerie is a place that can bring one to tears, and if you visit here after Giverny, you will be able to not only see as Monet did when he painted these gargantuan works, but you will be able to smell, taste, hear and feel the life that surrounded the Master! Also, do NOT miss the downstairs of the Orangerie - you can stand within inches of many, many masterworks - and, take as many pictures/video as you like! Additionally, the Marmottan Museum in Paris has the largest collection of his work. Definitely worth buying the Paris Pass (but not the ParisPasslib, IMO). My wife and I are returning for a week in mid-April & keeping our fingers-crossed the weather might be good but, no worry if not: we live in Seattle! :)
Thanks Rob and Laura. Yes, I visited the Orangerie in Paris several years ago, but I hope to return on this trip after visiting Giverny.
What I am really wondering is if my combination ticket will allow me to visit the Gardens and House before I go to the museum. I know if allows me to go to the front of the line, but I would prefer to go first to the Gardens. is this possible with a combination ticket?
Sorry that I misread that order. The order of visiting doesn't matter with the combo ticket.
And you don't want the 'Paris Pass' either but the Museum Pass for visiting all those sites in Paris.
We are also from Seattle and I want to echo every word from Rob. Giverny first, then either the Marmaton or L'Orangerie next. They're both magnificent for completely different reasons. Entering L'Orangerie, it was one of the first times I've literally gasped when I was presented with the magnificence of Monet's large paintings. Likewise, the Marmaton was exceptional because of the number of original paintings (all of his paintings in his Giverny house are reproductions, I think). Plus, the Marmaton is in an old mansion and we had a wonderful lunch in a café nearby (near the Muette metro station) :)
Finally, like Rob, my wife and I have a rented apartment is Paris (near Place d'Italie) in mid-April for 5 days and we have our fingers crossed for good weather. When you're from Seattle, you can always hope!
Approach the Giverny museum with reasonable expectations. It is a relatively new institution with no great stock of Impressionist masters, including little from the Old Master himself, Monet. Even so it compliments the gardens and will help comprehend the relationship between the painting techniques and the natural resources which they captured. The Marmottan as mentioned is a rich source back in Paris, while the lilies in the Orangerie are something of a stunt, but still an eyeful. And of course (I think 'of course') the d'Orsay is a wonderful, and essential, experience for this period of French art.
