Colmar to Basel to Freiburg...back to Colmar...Day Trip

Hi,
We are planning to go to Basel and Freiburg for a day trip from Colmar. Can anyone give any advise on the best way to go about doing this?

We are thinking of taking a train from Colmar to Basel...spend a couple hours there. Then take a train to Freiburg if possible. Is there a more direct route to get back to Colmar from Freiburg or would we need to go through Basel again?

Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks Sam!

Is this something we should book in advance? Are the prices the same whether we buy in advance or wait until the day of? I'm guessing the train station is close by to the bus station in Breisach? We will take this route to Freiburg.

On the return journey, we intend on taking the train from Freiburg to Basel, and then on to Colmar. Would anyone know if we need to buy advance tickets for this leg of the journey? Would pricing be the same the day of compared to purchasing in advance?

Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't buy tickets in advance. The bus is just a bus. You could buy tickets at the Tourist office in the Colmar train station just beforehand. I have not priced it out, but you might look at a Baden-Wuerttumberg Ticket ar Breisach. This will cover the train to Freiburg, then a regional train to Basel. These are unreserved trains, take any one you want. At Basel, it is a French TER to Comar. Unreserved and always the same price.

Further research shows it is actually a bus from Breisach to Freiburg, at least for the moment.

Re the B-W ticket, it is 30 EUR for 2 people, starting at 9 am weekdays, anytime weekends and German holidays. It lincludes buses, so it is good for the bus from Breisach, as well as local buses in Freiburg if you need to use one there.

Looking at the bus schedule, There is a week day bus from Colmar at 7:55, connecting to a bus to Freiburg at 8:55. The B-W ticket would not be good for that one, but if you wait 6 minutes, there is a bus at 9:01 that connects to a train to Freiburg.

The regional trains to Basel go mostly to Basel Badischer Bahnhof on the north side of Basel. The TER trains go from Basel SBB station. The B-W ticket is valid on connecting local trains.
