We are planning to stay in Colmar in early September and are considering a hotel near the train station. We are just wondering if this is a safe neighborhood as in our experience in other European cities these areas can sometimes be a little sketchy.
If memory serves, it's kind of far from the historic center.
The area is fine. It is about a 20 minute walk to the center.
Colmar is not a big city.
You may want to consider Hotel Le Maréchal, located on a canal in the La Petite Venise sction of the Old Town. We stayed there last year and highly recommend it, and it was an easy 10 minute walk to / from the train station.
We didn't have any worries walking back and forth a few times, as we picked up the Kutzig Alsace Wine Route hop on / hop off shuttle bus at the the train station on a couple of different days.
Last year we stayed at Colmar Hotel, 14 Rte de Rouffach and thoroughly enjoyed it. If offered a very nice breakfast buffet. If you have a car it has free parking and it’s a couple minutes walk from the train station. There are few restaurants around it and the historic center is a mile from it. Walking to the center is easy. If you don’t want to make the walk there is a free electric bus, the navette, that makes a loop around the historic center. The loop starts and ends at the train station and the bus operates 6 days a week. Think of it as a free hop on-hop off bus, but smaller. It only has room for about 12 people.
We are just wondering if this is a safe neighborhood
Could be dangerous to your wallet if you stumble into a Michelin starred restaurant.
