Colmar lodging recs please, with balcony + beautiful view, preferably over canal

Hello!
We are traveling to Colmar this fall, and there are a lot of apartments available in Booking.com and Airbnb...but I am finding it tricky to find an apartment with a balcony with a nice view close to the center of town. I checked a recommendation I saw on the forum for https://www.refletssurlalauch.fr which looked great - but the dates weren't available.

Two questions:

*Any recommendations for a similar apartment along the canal?

*Is Colmar the best base? We have a little more than a week to spend exploring the area, and we won't have a car. We thought Colmar would be a great base, because there are buses to get to the other smaller wine towns. We also liked the idea of staying in one place for a week, rather than packing up and moving about frequently. I'm open to any suggestions - and wondering if we might enjoy several nights in a smaller town? Or would that be tougher without our own car?

I've noticed some varied opinions on Colmar in my searches on the forum - and I'd welcome opinions and ideas as we plan. Typically we enjoy smaller towns over larger ones - so we thought we'd take a day trip to Strasbourg, but be settled in a smaller city or village.

Thanks for any ideas you can share...

Laurie

No recs on apartments with a balcony, but I believe booking.com includes “balcony” in the filters.

We based in Colmar for 4 nights last summer, in an apartment right along the Grand Rue. We had a rental car and drove to the surrounding villages. We loved our time there. So much so that we returned last December for the Christmas markets. Hotel prices in Colmar were too high, so we based in Strasbourg in December, and traveled by train & bus.

From Colmar, you can get to Turckheim by train, along with Strasbourg. Use the SNCF Connect app for train and bus info. Also look into the regional passes, which can save you some money. We used the Alsa + Group Day pass on a weekend to travel from Strasbourg to Ribeauville to Kaysersburg to Colmar to Strasbourg using tram, train, and buses. This pass would cover you all the way to Basel. https://www.cts-strasbourg.eu/en/online-store/fares/tickets/

No recommendations for an apartment because we stayed at a hotel by the train station. We enjoyed Colmar and the surrounding area. We had a rental car, but did take the train to Strasbourg.

If you didn’t know about it, Colmar has a free electric bus service that makes a circuit around the town about every 30 minutes. The route starts and ends at the train station. For part of the circuit it’s like a hop on hop off bus. The link has information about the bus and a map of the route.

Thank you - great info! We will be coming from Basel to Colmar, so learning about the regional passes is helpful!

I didn't know about the electric shuttle - there was one in Chamonix, and it was a fun way to travel around there. Glad to know it exists in Colmar as well!

Booking.com has been helpful about balconies...but I haven't been able to search for canal locations there or on Airbnb...so hopefully I can get a rec on this forum!

I'm glad to hear that you loved Colmar so much that you returned for the Christmas markets!

Thanks again,
Laurie
