I will be in Basel Switzerland in September, and would like to take a day trip to Colmar, France. Any suggestions on how to best spend a few hours there would be appreciated. Also, restaurant recommendations for a good lunch, and whether walking from the train station to the main part of town is possible. Merci!
We had a car, but we wandered the very center of the old town and loved it.
We found the Marche Couvert - a food market where we enjoyed a fabulous quiche and scalloped potatoes - the French are all about cheese ! It is the huge building right at the Rue des Ecoles bridge that goes over a very scenic and great photo op location over the La Lauch river.
Last year I was in Colmar. It took about 10 minutes to walk from the train station to the town center. The restaurant I wanted to eat lunch at, Sezanne at 30 Grand Rue, was closed on Monday, the day I was there. Don't remember where I had lunch, just walked around the town until I found a place & sat outside. The town does have two "trains" that offer you a tour of the city, https://www.tourisme-colmar.com/en/visit/visit/visit-colmar-with-a-little-train, I took the Green one.
Enjoy your trip.
For me the two key things to do in Colmar are wanderimg the gorgeous historic area and seeing the Isenheim altarpiece and as much of the rest of the Unterlinden Museum as you have time for. I would prioritize those two experiences over a lengthy meal without a second thought.
The usually-reliable Google Maps estimates the walking time from the train station to the museum at 15 minutes. The Little Venice section (la Petite Venise) is a bit closer. As little time as you have, I'd hop in a taxi if there's one outside the station when you arrive.
Thanks for the great information. Sounds like a fun day of exploring.
Since it is only 45 minute direct train trip, with trains every half hour in the morning and the late afternoon/early evening, I don't see this as a limited day trip. You could even have dinner in Colmar, the last train is at 21:53.
We did a Rhine River cruise a couple of years ago and spent an afternoon in Colmar. It was one of the most memorable towns we visited. It is very quaint and lovely. You can take a canal cruise, visit the indoor market place and just people watch. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Not sure about restaurants. Have fun.
Another recommendation for the Unterlinden Museum. The Isenheim Altarpiece is stunning and the audioguide is great.
For a nice lunch, I'd try Aux Armes de Colmar. For a delicious self-cater lunch, definitely the aforementioned Marche couvert. Hell, hit both
Thanks for your posts and recommendations! I read some where that the shops in Colmar are closed on Sunday and Monday, although it seems that there's quite a bit to do in this little town and we won't have a problem in filling up a day there. Looking forward to our visit.
