Colmar area sights?

My husband, daughter of 16 and myself are staying for six days in a small village near Colmar around the middle of July this year. We will have a car and enjoy picturesque villages, history, outdoor activities such as cycling perhaps, markets, and sometimes a museum. I am wondering what people would suggest for a few of our days? Are we too far from any sights back over the German border? Should we go to Strasbourg for a day and if so where might you suggest we park the car? Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Yes haut koenigsbourg is amazing. Loved it so much. It was a very foggy day but there it was above the fog and we just loved it.

Eguisheim was gorgeous and must see. Love Saint Hypolite too. So cute.

We Day tripped to Basel Switzerland just to say we had been and ended up liking it very much.

Colmar is awesome. Have fun.

Assuming you do plan to spend some time in Colmar, don't miss the Unterlinden museum. As museums go it's fairly small, easily seen, and has some wonderful pieces unique to that area.

You're next to Kayserberg, very cute town, birthplace of Albert Schweitzer with museum. Check out the bronze memorial plaques on the church in the center of town.

To got to Strasbourg, you can park at Colmar station and take the train, or to save a few nickles, drive to Selestat and park there and ride the train. Trains are every 15 minutes very early during commuter times, then every 30 minutes until late morning when they run at least every hour. It is a 32 minute ride from Colmar, and about 20 minutes from Selestat. Selestat is worth a stroll, like Colmar but without the tourists.

We stayed in Eguisheim (LOVED IT). We had a car and really enjoyed traveling the wine route. We loved the little towns especially Riquewihr and Ribeauville. Haut Koenigsbourg is worth your time and the views were lovely. I would recommend getting to Riquewihr by 9 or so or late in the afternoon. Its popular and I noticed people that got there later in the day were struggling for parking spots. You have given yourself a good chunk of time so I think you have time for Strasbourg. The cathedral is lovely. The town is pretty as well, it has some similarity to Colmar. I liked the little towns of Alsace more than Colmar, but you should go to Colmar for a half day. I don't know much cities right over the Germany border. I have been to Breisach which is quite small and not as picturesque as some of the Rhine towns further north, however, on the French side of the border from Breisach is Neuf-Brisach which does have an old fortification with historical significance.

I enjoyed exploring all the villages. Leave time after you visit the Chateau de Haut Koenigsbourg to spend an hour or two at nearby Monkey Mountain, where you interact with a colony of Barbary apes, like the ones in Gibraltar but not aggressive or nasty. They are cute little monkeys of all ages, including lots of babies and youngsters.

You will need to find parking in Colmar as well as in Strasbourg. There's a big lot in Colmar at the edge of the historic center, of which about half is reserved for cars with passes, the rest for anyone. I was lucky to find a local who explained in French which sections I could use. In Strasbourg I returned the rental car after being lucky to find a 2-hour spot next to my hotel to check in. The larger villages have parking lots (you need to prepay at the machines and display the receipt in the car), I found street parking in the smaller ones. At Haut Koenigsbourg cars park along the road that loops around the castle. I parked as soon as I saw an empty spot, then hiked up to the entrance and passed a couple closer empty spots, but you never know. Monkey Mountain had a lot.
