Hello. My daughter and I are traveling to Colmar in December and I'd appreciate lodging recommendations. We will be using public transportation (train from CDG to Strasbourg, then train to Colmar) and prefer comfortable, safe, and quiet lodging near restaurants and museums. Hotel Turenne has been mentioned a couple of times in posts, but any/all suggestions are appreciated. We'll be in Strasbourg 2 nights, Colmar for 5, then back to Strasbourg for 2 nights before catching train back to Paris for flight home. Thank you!
We stayed in the Hotel Gutenberg in Strasbourg and couldn't have been happier.
It was in possibly the second largest square and easy walking distance to everything, especially the cathedral.
A very reasonable price, great room and great service.
I enjoyed Hotel Saint-Martin in Colmar which is in the pedestrian area. However, at this stage they may be totally sold for December.
Years ago we stayed at an Ibis hotel by the train station in Strasbourg. In 2023, we stayed at Colmar Hotel by the train station in Colmar. While not in the town center (1 mile away) one can get on the free navette bus to go there. The free bus runs 6 days a week and makes a loop around the town. Think of it as a free hop-on, hop-off bus.
As Pam above noted, it's late to be booking in those two places for the Christmas season, so just be aware that availability will be limited and prices could be quite high. I would book as soon as possible if you can.
We are staying at the Hotel St. Augustine in Strasbourg in mid-December so you might want to try there. They were closed for a bit for a renovation and only recently reopened, so they might have rooms available. https://hotelsaintaugustin.fr/
I can recommend the Ibis Styles in Colmar.
On the edge of Old Town, only a five minute walk to the center. Basic, clean and quiet.
I can also recommend Wistub Brenner in Colmar for dinner. Excellent Alsatian food. Reservations mandatory.
We stayed in an apartment in Colmar a few weeks ago. I just want to mention that the city center is walking distance from the train station. HOWEVER, our luggage was heavy and it was nearly 90*F and we got in the taxi line. Except no taxi ever came. We learned that Uber is the way to go, (it's a new thing there!) and sometimes it will be a taxi that comes via the uber app. Just keep that in mind in case weather is uncooperative; cold/rainy. We successfully used it going back to the train station.
Also, if you want to visit some of the nearby smaller villages, Arnaud at L'Alasciette, is really a terrific guy. We learned about the company of the forum and took a fun day tour. He can organize lots of itineraries for you.
La Soi for dinner requires a reservation. (Another great RS forum suggestion!)
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and recommendations. Most places are booked already, so we will visit another time. We've pivoted to Ireland for December. :-)
