David Leibovitz has a good podcast with a local: A Chat with Amy Pasquet about French apéritif Pineau des Charentes
From the family-owned Maison Pasquet, makers of Cognac. That might be a resource for you.

Thanks Activity Girl! I'll check it out.
We did a couple nights in Cognac last spring. We tasted at Remy Martin (their facility just outside of downtown where the vineyards are located) and visited Hennessy in town. It's a beautiful town made from limestone from St. Emilion! We stayed at a BnB just outside of town in the countryside and it was fantastic. We did not do a tour but scheduled our own tours, which was super easy especially if you have a car.
If in Normandy, you might sample the local brandy called Calvados, based on the local apples. It is a moderate relative of cognac, not fruity, and also somewhat more moderately priced.
Thanks KimberlySEA and Southam for the feedback!
