Is the path from Omaha Beach to the America Normandy Cemetery closed? Is there a website I can check of the status of the path?
From the website: "Due to security concerns, the pathway from Normandy American Cemetery to the beach was closed to the public in 2016. However, public beach access is available nearby."
It's best to have a car when you visit. After you see the cemetery, you can drive down to the beach. While there are vacation homes and even hotels in some sections, the beach beneath the cemetery is free of any development.
Yes, unfortunately the path that leaves directly from within the cemetery to Omaha Beach has been closed for a while. However, if you go just East of the cemetery out of the parking lot (but still by foot), you can walk down the bluff to the beach, and it is very worth it. In some ways it is an even more interesting and scenic route—though very slightly less direct. However, it takes you by some German bunkers and memorials to the allies en route.
For the more adventurous, I've done this route backwards once on an early morning run from Omaha Beach, up the bluff early before the cemetery was open, and back West on the inland roads around the cemetery, and back down draw 2 to my starting point and my car. 5–7 miles depending on how you do this, but one of the most memorable runs in my life.
