classical and traditional jazz music in Paris

My husband and I are returning to Paris second half of October to celebrate my birthday. We were there in spring and attended a Vivaldi concert at beautiful Ste Chapelle. We are interested in attending another relatively inexpensive concert or two in beautiful venues (maybe not as beautiful :) I checked out a ballet at Palais Garnier - but with the service charge it would be well over $300 euros for decent seats. Too rich for me! Some other options I have looked into are already booked. Suggestions are welcome!

Also, if anyone knows of a bar/restaurant or other venue where traditional (1910-1930) American jazz is played, please let me know.

Thank you for any and all suggestions. Susan

Hi Susan, check out what's happening at the Philharmonie de Paris.

The Philharmonie is out at the northeastern edge of the city at La Villette - a brand-new superb concert hall in the La Villette complex. Site information fully available in English.

Specific link to how to get there (Metro line 5, Porte de Pantin):

There's also La Maison de la Radio, but I couldn't find an English page on their site. But you should be able to decipher dates and programs.

It's in the 16th arrondissement. Nearest metro stop is Ranelagh on Line 9; there are also several bus stops nearby and a stop on the RERC (Avenue du President Kennedy).

Not sure about jazz clubs, but usually on Saturday mornings on the bridge between Ile de La Cite and Ile St Louis there is a small group that plays for an hour or so just for contributions. Very traditional music and quite good.

Wow, a 1930 cutoff is a little early even for jazz. One of Paris' main jazz clubs, Le Petit Journal Montparnasse, does feature a wide variety of jazz with some great looking traditional bands in October. Sidney Bechet Memory All-Stars Oct 10, Jean-Pierre Bertrand Boogie System Oct 14, 5 O'Clock Jazz Group Oct 24, Gypsy Jazz Revival Oct 26.

There's a terrific gypsy jazz guitarist, Raphael Fays, who might be around. He also plays flamenco and classical.

Listening to jazz and blues is what I did in Europe. Music takes one into all kinds of places.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have reviewed the schedule on line. No really traditional American jazz (by my lights). The only interesting entry is the Sidney Bechet -- but that happens before we arrive. I appreciate the thought. Susan
