Checked bag fee by Easyject fly from Nice to London

The airline website said 30 euro at the ticket counter and 45 euro at the gate but I heard that they could charge a lot more. Is this true? What other airlines fly from Nice to London? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Their terms and conditions state 44euro at the counter and 60euro at the gate for up to 20kg. Why would you not buy luggage with your ticket as it is far cheaper?

If you go over 20kg then you also have to worry about the excess luggage fees.

BA also have flights but they will cost you considerably more in nearly every case.

We flew BA Nice to Gatwick last year and it was $85 Canadian dollars one way...I know it was a lot more to fly into Heathrow tho...and it was mid-Oct so maybe prices were lower...

Know that Easyjet is VERY strict on its luggage policy. They offer discounts for checking luggage when you buy your ticket and that is the way to go. You won't get away with sneaking it onboard.

Thanks you all. I wonder if a train option would work better? Taking a night train from Nice to London that way save me a night of hotel. Where the train stop in London? I am staying in the coven Garden District, between Trafalgar Square and Waterloo Bridge on the Srand.

You'll never do it by train as cheaply as you will by a cheap flight plus baggage.

If you know you will have a piece of baggage why wouldn't you buy it when you buy your ticket? That's when it is cheapest. I do it all the time. You can even add it a day before you fly for the same price. It only goes up if you drop it at the airport without prior arrangement, and gets much more expensive (the gate price) when you try to carry on a bag and it is found to be too big. The sizes are given very clearly on the website (and on the most excellent app which I strong recommend) and they WILL ask you to put your bag in the sizer.

There are no trains at all between Nice and London. The only trains between London and the rest of mainland Europe are Eurostar, and they only go between London and Paris, and London and Brussels.

If you try to go by train (I've done it several times), there is a Teoz night train between Nice Ville and Gare de Austerlitz (across the river from Gare de Lyon) which takes 11:40, arrives at around 7:40, is chronically late, you need to get across Paris to Gare du Nord, if your train is on time you will be doing that Métro journey at rush hour and the train with sleeping compartment will NOT be cheap. Ooops. No more sleepers. Just couchettes which you share with strangers which go better or worse. It runs until 28. Aug 2016; not 12., 19., 26., 27. of March, 16., 30. of April.

Because it cannot be counted to arrive in Paris on time you need to allow plenty of time before joining the Eurostar. In any event you need to check in at Gare du Nord at least 60 minutes prior to departure or they will likely deny boarding. The Eurostar takes just under 2:30.

So by train you would leave Nice Ville at 20:00, and arrive around lunch time in London, likely very tired because many people have little sleep on those night trains.

The usual day TGV train on the same route (into Gare de Lyon in Paris where you can RER to Gare du Nord) only takes 5:40 and is more reliable.

The Eurostar arrives in London at St Pancras International. You can take the Piccadilly Line tube 3 stops to Covent Garden, 4 to Leicester Square.

I'm surprised that you would want to go through all this to avoid checking a bag.

By the way, it is Covent Garden, with a T. A coven is a group of witches.

If you are somewhere in the Strand, that isn't Covent Garden, and the distance between Waterloo Bridge and Trafalgar Square is non trivial, as is the walk down from Covent Garden Tube.

Can,

I heartily agree with the very thorough and articulate comments from Nigel. A few additional comments.....

It doesn't matter which other airlines fly from Nice to London as they will most likely all have similar charges concerning checked luggage. That's the way the business model works on budget airlines - provide very cheap fares and then make money on the "frills" such as meals on board, luggage, advance seat selection, etc. (things which used to be included with the cost of a ticket). Many of these also use a "sliding scale" with the price of tickets increasing as the flight fills, so if you wait too long to buy your ticket you'll be paying more.

easyJet is my preferred budget airline in Europe and I use them as often as I can (most recently in September). I really don't see what the problem is with a €30 checked luggage charge. I check one bag every time I fly with them and typically pay for the next highest weight tier just in case my bag is a bit over the limit. It's really not a big deal. If you don't check your bag at the gate, you won't have to worry about higher charges. Lately I've also been paying for a few extras such as Speedy Boarding as it makes the budget flying experience so much more pleasant.

As Nigel so aptly pointed out, a night train trip from Nice to London will likely be "the trip from hell". It will not only take considerably longer, but it will also very likely be considerably more expensive. I tend to use rail travel whenever possible in order to avoid the usual "dog & pony show" at the airport, but in this case a flight is really the best option.

One final point to make about easyJet is that they're very strict on carry-on luggage as well. Unless you pay for one of the optional packages, you'll be limited to one carry-on item only. That doesn't mean "one plus a personal item such as a purse or laptop case", it means one only of the approved size!

Good luck!

"What other airlines fly from Nice to London?"

To find all flights, try Skyscanner: http://www.skyscanner.com/

Remember that, as far as the airlines are concerned, London has six airports. Some of them take much more time and/or money to reach then others; be careful about a cheaper flight that ends up being more expensive or more hassle because of this.

Do a dummy booking (up the point where you put in your credit card) to see the total price, including all baggage fees, on any airlines you're considering. Then investigate transit to the London airport involved from Covent Garden. That's the only way to know which is cheapest in the end when you include all fees.

I like the idea of "coven garden" - a whole new tourism sector!
