We are going to France in Sept. and would like to rent a car. We arrive in Paris but would be prepared to rent a car elsewhere if it was less money. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I should add I'me 76 & have noted that prices sky rocket over age 60. Thank you. Ken

I have no idea where would be the cheapest, but I’m trying to book at Lyon airport through AutoEurope. Have you done a search from different cities?

I am looking at different cities. I also found ( today ) an article in The Guardian ( online ) detailing auto rentals. I seem to be looking at 1,000. to 1,800. CDN $ for app 28 days. My age is a deal buster (76 ). I've mostly toured by m/c but it's become less of an option. Trains or bus's take up too much time re schedules, locations etc. I suspect we will book an auto pick up & return at the CDG airport.... we'll see. Thank you for responding.

That's actually an excellent price for 28 days. We have always paid about a thousand and that was before Covid. You might look into a lease for that length of time because insurance is automatically included. About the same price. Autoeurope handles both rent and lease.

30-40 euros/day is standard. Less is a great deal, and more isn't unusual.
Also, I did a quick check on Autoeurope: 70+ age does not affect price. France typically has no upper limit for rental age.

That isn’t bad for 28 days. I have an upcoming 20 days intermediate car rental and its 909€. Later in the year I’ve reserved a compact car for 21 days and it’s 872€. Renting a car is no longer inexpensive.

Once you prioritize price, you have to find some way to measure "quality" as well. Do they have the office hours I need? Will they have the automatic transmission I was promised? Will they make me take a bigger car (at no extra cost) that is scary to drive and park in the medieval cities I plan to visit? Will they replace a breakdown quickly and with low additional costs? How much is the Loss Damage Waiver? Can I take the car across the border? How long will the pickup line be? Are the cars in good condition?
